Parked in a "no parking zone" on a curb in New York. Sat in the car with flashers on for 5 minutes, picked up someone from the building, and drove off. Then I got a ticket in the mail for illegal parking 2 weeks later. It was the date and time that I was parked with blinkers on. The officer didn't bother to slap it on my windshield, or even make his or her existence known. Could have just snapped my license plate without even stopping their vehicle as they drove by I guess. Is this common/typical in New York, and can it be protested?

Should have just laid in the spot covered in feces and nobody would have bothered you.

You should write and explain "I HAD MY FLASHERS ON". They probably missed that.

You were illegally parked and got a summons.

What is the issue?

No Parking Signs
Many people pull over at No Parking signs temporarily in order to load or unload passengers or groceries. TheNew York Department of Transportation allows you to stop to load or unload packages or merchandise at curbside, as well as stop to expeditiously drop off or pick up passengers at this sign. But keep it moving, because this sign doesn't permit the driver to leave the vehicle unattended for even a brief few minutes
No Standing Signs
No Standing signs apply to unloading and loading people only, not merchandise. New York law allows you to expeditiously drop off or pick up passengers at this sign, but it doesn't allow you to wait for passengers to arrive or to load or unload merchandise at the curb. The important thing to remember about No Standing signs is that they are “people only” signs, and you could receive a ticket if you don't adhere to this rule.

No Stopping Signs
Of all three signs discussed here, No Stopping signs are the strictest. No Stopping signs mean that you cannot stop for any reason – to drop off or pick up passengers, to wait for people to arrive, or to load or unload merchandise. Any violation of this sign can be punishable by law. The only time that you should ever stop at one of these signs is if it is a true emergency or if you are directed to do so by a police officer. However, you should make sure to obey all traffic signals around No Stopping signs as you normally would.

What exactly are you going to "protest"? The new mobile ticketing cars have video and picture taking capability. It is going to show your car parked in a No Parking zone. Very difficult to contest picture and video evidence.

I have had to deal with NYC parking on multiple occasions with personal and business cars. They very rarely admit it when they are wrong. I have had clear cut cases where they ticketed on the wrong day of opposite side of street, ticketed when parked in legitimate spots with No Parking restrictions and still the judge upheld the ticket.

Easiest solution is to pay the fine and move on.

The only question I have is if they also included the photo of your infraction with the ticket in the mail or make mention of a photo or video of you parked there? If they did or if they have photo evidence, just pay the ticket.

No, they did not. Really I am upset that they didn't have the guts/courtesy to get out of their car and tap on mine. I kind of feel like there's an unwritten rule that you should be able to have a conversation or opportunity to explain yourself to the complaining officer.

Based on what you said you have no defense

Pay the fine and move on

I'm not sure about that. If they place a ticket on your car it shows it was obviously parked. If they have video and or photo, they have proof you were parked, if they don't, what proof do they have? I would call them, not admit to anything but ask if they have any type of video or photo because you really don't recall parking where they said...

guts/courtesy??---you must be kidding--they have parking traps all over mid town--try crossing an intersection and getting trapped in a cross walk by a double parked truck conveniently ignored by 5 traffic cops waiting there--they give you a ticket then the guy behind you that had to stop as they ticketed you then gets his--they care not

In the not to distant future, NYC will just start sending parking tickets to every registered driver in NY, NJ and CT. Charge $40. Most people will pay.

Had my friend who I picked up just take a picture of the sign since I didn't remember exactly what it said and it is covered in a black plastic bag and tape.

I don't even know if the sign was covered then, my friend said not to get out of the car and just wait so I assume I was in a "no parking zone"- no way to know when the sign was covered

I still haven't paid that parking ticket that I got in The Village on the night when the Mets won the World Series in 1969.

Got a ticket in Newark once video, picture said I went through a red light .8 seconds after if went red. The light was yellow for less than two seconds....they said i could come down to newark to contest. Would have to be there all day, pay for parking and would not know when they would call me..Mailed the check in too.

And here are the rules for the White Zone and the Red Zone.

Not if they saw him pull up illegally park then pull away when a party exited the building got in the car and it drove off
I think that's still a Stop and not a Park.

That said the judge us there to lay taxes, not render justice. Bad break.

They have cameras all over NYC. It is possible the person reviewing the camera tape caught you and sent you the violation. Just pay it and move on.
