A look at the QB numbers for first year starters is rather sobering. MIKE TEEL posted a 120 QB rating his first year (06) with 12 TDs to 13 INTs, and a 55% completion percentage. Then of course 2 very good seasons followed of 145 and 148 respectively. TOM SAVAGE had a 128 in 09 with 52% completion. His Pitt year (13) showed a 138 rating with 21 TDS to 9 INTs and a 61% completion in contrast. And GARY NOVA had a 116 QB rating first year, that improved to 145 senior year.
The good news is that RU was able to overcome the subpar QB play in 2006, and also 2009 (won 9 games).
Which leads to 2 questions:
1. Can RU survive expected subpar QB play in 2015?
That depends on how quickly the OLine can gel. Because running back is loaded. WR is close behind as an RU position of strength. Which will help to keep defenses honest. But figure McDaniels to simplify things and rely on safer schemes. Keeping turnovers (INTs) to a minimum has to be the primary objective.
2. Can Laviano/Rettig surpass expectations?
Well, senior type numbers with QB ratings around 140 or above cannot be expected. A TEEL or NOVA type first year would be hard to overcome. But I'll take what SAVAGE did in 09. Because despite only a 52% completion percentage, he protected the ball with only 7 INTs.
