Hobbs just announced on The Alley twitter feed that they have identified 2 new areas to move the Alley, but unfortunately they are not available this year. He said they will continue to work on it, but he wants the spirit of the Alley to live on. So any student who is in the stadium for team warmups 30 mins before the game will receive a $10 concession stand voucher. He also said there have been 8000 student tickets claimed already for the game.

It is actually a shame that we would have to do this to get people in the stadium before kickoff.

Other than a few select games, this has always been a issue.

Shows how small time our fan base really is.

It should go, "Here is a $10 voucher for a Coke to go with the rum airplane bottles you should sneak in."

Nothing like a cash offer for students! I wish Hobbs would do that for the regular fanbase! What happened to stadium giveaways?- 0 so far this year.from their

This could backfire to an extent. I can see and hear media saying "Rutgers has resorted to paying students to attend tt's football games." Students have to attend before they R in their seats 30 minutes early. In a way sneaky brilliant-OR SO HOBBS THINKS!

In a way t's a refund from their student activity fees.

Wrong. College stadiums all over the nation have empty student sections 30-minutes prior to games and half-empty middle of the 1st quarter. We've proved this over-and-over-again and fans of most B1G schools have stated as much about their student sections. Same thing: big game, or night game, big difference in when the kids arrive.

It proves our fanbase is small time, but not in the way you think - small-time, anal and micro-managing, worrying about what fellow fans are doing instead of shutting up and enjoying themselves.

I rate you NO STARS.

This is a sorry state of affairs said to think Hobbs has to grovel

Give-aways of all sorts are the industry standard in sports marketing and fan engagement. You all have no idea what you are talking about.

Pretty sure Michigan did a promo, on Coke cans IIRC, to get students into games earlier a few years ago.

Is there anything our fans won't complain about lol?

BTW - 8,000 tix already, for a noon start following that debacle last week, is impressive. Just show up now kids!

Students better show up, or else the S-L will be ready with the headline "Rutgers can't even PAY students to show up for football"
I agree, this is a mistake and could turn into a nightmare. If we're losing and the stadium is half empty by the 3rd QTR ESPN will spin this into an uglier loss than what you'll witness on this site. Seriously guys what an ill advised idea.

why? just so you have a fresh reason to whine, midweek, between games?
How about this. This reeks of desperation. The program needs to mature and start behaving like they belong in the room for crying out loud.

So when Michigan gave, IIRC, rebates on Coke cans (or whatever it was), to get students into the game, did that also "reek of desperation"?

Absolutely nothing wrong with this. Remember when Schiano started a 1st quarter "free semester" student giveaway to get more kids to the games? No big deal.

Wasn't a rebate. Buy a coke and get a free game day ticket.

This is good.

Nothing like Georgia State dropping $10,000 from the ceiling of the Georgia Dome during halftime just to get anyone to show up at all.

Actually it did. If you remember the press at the time it was ridiculed by the talking heads. IIRC, the promo wasn't even supposed to be free ticket but somehow that was even botched. However, the reason it reeked of desperation was because they were facing a boycott due to poor play but trying to hold onto the 100k+ attendance streak.

Would you rather they do nothing? It a problem for all schools. I would rather have an admin showing they are dedicated to creating a great atmosphere then one that's just says oh well it happens every where. Embarrassing is losing by 70+ not trying to build a great atmosphere. If someone writes an article about it you just tell recruits they are doing a t for them to have a great game day atmosphere. I wish Penn State would do something to get students in earlier especially for noon games.

Will it work? I have my doubts because it seems like college kids these days are not as poor as when most of use went to school. It seems like many would just brush it off like no big deal. If it works I see many colleges copying it.

I wasn't saying that they shouldn't try. I was pointing out though at the time Michigan did looked desperate. I think it's turned out alright for them since then though. There's a narrative going that it's ok because other schools do it. Which is false. I have been to many a college game including about a dozen away from the friendly confines of the Beav and never received a giveaway.

Counter intuitively I still think one of their problem's is they give students free tickets. Charge students $10 a game/$50 per season. By giving away free tickets your telling your customers "go to this event that has literally no value" people love deals but "free" changes your mentality.

I'm pretty sure the cost of the tickets (for undergrads-last I heard and experienced grad students don't get free tickets-or discounted) is included in the undergrad student fees.

Understood. But you also have a athletic subsidy perception issue. So drop student activity fees by $5 for all students. Then next step is assuming your student section shrinks, you create a young alumni section charge $20 per or $100 per season. So fresh out of college kids can still be part of the student section.

Do y'all just want me to be your AD? :)

They charge $99 for student season tickets. This insures you have a ticket for the big games (Michigan / Penn State). If they sold 4,000 student season tickets, the remeaning 6,000 are given away for free each game, via a lottery. My son has season tickets.

All they had to do was hand out a pass to the alley when it reopens, which can be stamped for access and some free food there, not that there is anything terrifying about 8000 students at the alley.

I'm sorry you need to make theses comments to appropriate your general lack of personal satisfaction in life.

Way off base. It cannot be argued this practice is the industry standard in professional and college athletics. You can have your opinion it's just not informed and any industry exec would laugh. Point blank you're wrong.

Please explain how my comment saying something that Michigan did to keep a streak alive was a desparate move (their AD was fired not long after) is indicative of a general lack of satisfaction in my personal life? And could you further indicate how unsatified I am? I want to be sure I don't need to seek out some professional help.

I understand that tchotchke giveaways are fairly common in pro sports, especially baseball, especially minor league baseball, however big time college football, I've never seen it. Of course this really wasn't the point of my comment, it was that Michigan coke and ticket special a couple years ago was a desparate move. And that shouldn't be the justification for RU to do it. If y'all want to do it and think it's a good idea, then great. Just don't use the, they did it so it's ok for us to do it rationalization.

I guess $10 wasn't worth it too much to the students. Less than 100 at the 30 minute mark.
