Hofstra 96, Stony Brook 58

Of course the transitive property does not apply, but a 40 point blowout to a mediocre Hofstra squad is an indication that Stony Brook is not very good.

That is the classic WTF trap game for Stony Brook. Right after the game that was probably the biggest one circled on their schedule all season, and they lost it. Not surprised at all.

Sb is not very good, period. Sb is 3-7 and just lost by 40 to a Hofstra who has 5 losses. Im very happy where we are 9-1 but i realize we have played nobody. I watched SHU a few times, very tough team. Lets see how we do in that game.

Memphis is 7-3 but a nice win by monmouth who was down 12 in second half on the road.

I agree with Rumba. I attended the RU-SB game and it meant everything to Stony Brook. It was like their Super Bowl this year with Steve Pikiell returning. I'm sure they were completely deflated after losing to RU after being so high for the game. It was a prime example of a trap game for them.

Stony Brook was probably completely deflated after the heart breaking loss to us, a game they had circled all summer.

If they beat us I would bet a grand they would have beaten Hofstra too.

I would take that bet.

Like I mentioned any road win is a great win but SB will be fortunate to hit double digits in wind this year .

Look RU is 9-1 everybody is loving this...but the truth is the OOC SOS is 346 out of 351 schools. There is no spinning that and virtually every school RU played is various amounts of bad. Don't look too much into comparative scores. I saw posts saying Hartford was good because they beat BC..no they arent. Just as likely Stony Brook isnt as bad as they played against Hofstra. The Stony Brook win was great because it continued to see the progress and growth of the program and we need to see this tangible evidence even though our record means little on the national scene. Thats why I cringe about expectations and NIT talk and pencilling in wins. The program is nowhere near that. Its about getting better. De Paul at 153 (Sagarin) is the highest rated school RU has played. All but Penn State are top 100 rated Sagarin schools. Be happy with the wins we have now that we needed to take if we are to take the next step and start accumulating Big 10 which is no given.,

Based on past history of utter futility Rutgers already having 2 road wins should be viewed as a positive sign.Fans should also have a positive outlook with the 9-1 record but also realistic enough to understand that the perceived easy schedule will be officially over starting with Seton Hall.

What do we need to do to make the NIT?... Keep improving at this rate for another 2 years. Lol.

We are better than we were last year already. Last year we would've lot that Stony Brook game, and probably at least 2 others. Whether we are better than any Big Ten teams remains to be seen. I think we are. So that is all great. But that's where its tops. Hard work alone is simply not going to move us out of the bottom third of the Big Ten.

Its going to take recruits seeing us playing real basketball, like a team, and fighting for wins, which we have been doing. It's going to take the staff convincing those recruits that RU can be good. Then we can get the talent upgrade, and THEN we can compete at the level we want to compete at. Its a 2-3 year process, even if we improve by leaps and bounds as we seem to be doing. Getting better is just going to get harder and harder. The first steps are the easy ones.

- considering the hype - the build-up - of the game with Rutgers - against their old coach - in their home facility - - then playing an away game at Hofstra ...
not a huge shock that they could not find the "on button" tonight .

Rumba is spot on.

Look up "trap game" in the dictionary, and you'll see "Stony Brook vs Hofstra" as a perfect example.

Stony Brook was sky high for the Rutgers/Pikell game. And they, no doubt, thought they had the game won when they took a 2nd half 10 point lead. But "blew" the lead and lost a heart breaker.

And then they are supposed to get psyched up to play .... Hofstra?! Yeah, not so much.

I think SB hit like 13 three pointers against us. Just like Hartford, they were shooting the lights out. Didn't work like that at Hofstra and that can happen. Every team has shooters and if you don't play defense; crazy things can happen. There should be no let down tonight as FDU also has shooters. Miami was a better team and beat us handily but I would bet if that game was at the RAC, it could have been closer and on any given day; we could beat them. But no question, they have a little more talent. Didn't Hartford lose by 15 to Niagra? Then they came and almost beat us and fell just short and then won at BC. They have shooters.

Just like the little guys can have hot days, the big boys can go cold. SB may be "bad" overall, but on the night we were playing them they were HOT. 13 threes. Two years ago, we beat #4 Wisconsin (a Final Four team who only else lost to Duke) on a night that they shot 5-30 from three. So, just as not all our OOC opponents played like CCSU (and therefore we should give ourselves credit), not all Big Ten teams will play like Kentucky in every game we face. On the nights when our opponents are off, is when we have to take advantage.

All great points. And it will be SP and staff who now will be able to show that we have a tangible plan as well as brand spanking new facilities that will be in place by the time they're sophomores.

move the needle...9-1 is a great stepping stone and surely a shot in the arm for the team's confidence. Don't care what SOS you are playing.

As for hofstra...different day, different mindset, different team. Can't do transitive property

I don't buy that. I thought Stoney Brook was a very disciplined , fundamentally strong and well-coached team that played well against rutgers.

RU is 10-1 and the floor is now "what does it take to make the NIT"??....a little bit of a reach, don't you think??

The CBI is a level below the NIT.....NIT teams in this revised format of the new NIT, which is now controlled by the NCAA, typically win 20+ games and just miss the NCAA's....That means RU would need to get to 20, just to have a discussion....that's not a legitimate expectation right now on any level.

RU has 8 just games left at the RAC and we are in mid December....and 3 of those 8 are the last 3 games of the year....I'm happy and know this staff is the right fit for the program and recruiting is going to happen as well.

But the ceiling has always been to first break .500 overall as a program, something RU has not done in a decade....we need to establish a winning season and learning how to play with an entirely new staff/players/defense/rebounding etc....

Pikiell arrived here less than 9 months ago folks....Year 2 will be significantly more realistic to look for expectations after a year in the system, a true recruiting focus and figuring out what pieces fit and what doesn't.

This is about establishing a culture, which has been done but will still be tested in the B1G.....there are no freebies on the road like the Old Big East, where you could steal a road game at USF, win at DePaul or win at Seton Hall.....The B1G has legitimate road arenas and teams almost always "hold-serve" at home.........

Mission accomplished for Year One and early in the season.....anything beyond that is gravy....

All true, but you are what your record says you are and their record at 3-7 says they are not very good.
