I think I read that Melton was rated as like the #2 or #3 rated player from NJ for the class of 2017. How are the other 4 guys rated among the Top 20 or Top 50 or so in NJ? I hope someone who follows football recruiting very closely can comment. Thank you. It is nice to seeing NJ players looking at us again.

Clark - #3 Rivals, #4 NJ Varsity
Melton - #7 Rivals, #2 NJ Varsity
Jones - #31 Rivals, #26 NJ Varsity
Watts - Unrated Rivals, #13 NJ Varsity
Beaty - Unrated Rivals, Unrated NJ Varsity

Most on this board weight the NJ Varsity rankings higher, as they are done by this site, while the Rivals rankings are done by "the national guys".

I suspect that the unrated players won't be unrated too much longer.

If Watts is as good as many think the reason he's unrated by the national guys is likely because he only played 3 or 4 games in '15 due to injury. The NJ guys saw enough to believe he is one of the most talented kids in the class of '17

A slightly different look is by position Rivals has Clark, Melton, and Jones as # 1's in NJ by position. while this is all nice what it says is the players that RU has committed are all very good H.S. football players, and this hopefully translates to good and productive college careers. This is also great from the perspective that much better players have committed far earlier than what we have seen in the last four years and this can certainly become a momentum builder. Also we usually see a number of commits after the summer camps, so recruiting is off to a good start from both a quality and #'s perspective.

That is interesting in that it means either one of two things:
  1. 247 just happened to complete its evaluation on the exact same day that Beaty verballed to RU. Possible, but quite a coincidence.
  2. Or the rating is based on the Rutgers offer. A nice sign of respect!

Thanks for all of the responses. This looks like we are really moving on up. Hopefully we can get several more of the top listed NJ recruits to jump on board.

I noticed that too. I also think Beaty got overlooked simply because his teammate and fellow lineman is Micah Clark. Looking at some clips of Clark he obviously dominates, which can also overshadow others on the team. But I think Ash didn't just offer Beaty because of his brother but also because he's a solid player in his own right. Being local allowed RU's staff to get a much better read on Beaty's skills than other outsiders who were just scouting Clark.
