Where ever he went as an OC the team did well. Either he left when he saw the team was going to have a down year, or he has some kind of magic to make teams good. As an experimental new HC his salary was 1.5 mil and jumped to 3mil after having a successful season and now he will probably jump to 6 million at Texas. In a way the bad season benefits Rutgers by not having to retain a hot coach with a huge salary increase.

i doubt we will ever have that problem

He had a great staff for starters. His 2nd in command is likely going to get the HC gig and if he decides to go to Austin, their OC would be a great plan b pick. Didn't hurt that his recruiting territory has tons of D1 level prospects. Big reason why I think UH met the backlash of the Big 12 adding them. There were a few schools very vocal about their recruiting areas drying up if UH had gotten the invite.

Oh like Drew Mehringer?
No one is saying DM is a bad WR coach. We're saying his lack of experience as an OC makes him woefully unprepared to be implementing a new offensive scheme at a school that doesn't have the kinds of ponies he needs. Had he been first time OC this year at Houston, the results wouldn't have been nearly as disastrous with Herman to guide him.

And when people say, 'Urban Meyer endorsed him'...I recently wrote a letter of recommendation for an admin assistant who was looking for an admin at another company. I said sure, no problem. I wouldn't endorse her however for a job as Chief Operating Officer.

In one of his interviews Coach Ash said that he gets nervous before every game...nothing wrong with that since I get nervous before my big presentations too but confidence even if it's false confidence is always something that goes a long way

Everyone loved Hermann's fire/juice here in Houston and that feeds the players during practices and game days

Obviously he's gotta couple that with football intelligence & staff but I think in college football confidence has a more prominent role than most people might think

“He’s the brightest young coach in America and is more than ready to run his own offense.”

--Tom Herman on Drew Mehringer

So, is Herman, a literal genius, wrong about Mehringer while the board folks are right?

I think it's really important to keep in mind how closely these guys work together and what they know and don't know about coaching and what they know about what the people around them know about the game.

Mehringer is ready. He just needs playmakers. That's what the offense is about. A playmaker at QB getting it to playmakers or making the play himself. Gio started making some plays for two halves of football before the hammy popped, then Mehringer went back to being at fault.

Laviano almost beat Michigan State with Caroo making plays. Who was making Caroo plays this year? Nobody.

Grant, Mitchell, Melton, Wormley, Watts, second year Harris and hopefully Lovett. A healthy, experienced Gio. We're going to be better next year.

A very good coach, but I'm not ready to anoint him GREAT just yet. One thing is for sure, he will turn Texas around in a big hurry.
