i think the people who are saying we will sign 25-30 are a bit optimistic.

Based on the current roster and the 2016 class coming in, there are 72 players on scholarship that will have eligibility in 2017. This includes seniors this year that have junior year eligibility because of red shirting.
Given the 85 scholarship limit this leaves 85 - 72 = 13 available scholarships for next year. Then add 5 transfers and maybe 4 red shirt seniors not asked back or just decide to move on. That gets me to 22 scholarships, so not a lot of room left.

I've been having the same thoughts and was guessing somewhere near the same number (of scholarships available). However, I do wonder about Ash and Co.'s recruiting philosophy. Is he "over-recruiting" now because he is preparing for the possibility of losing 1 or 2 of these recruits before signing day (to another school)? Is he over-recruiting because he's considering grey-shirting some recruits (even though the B1G does have an agreement against doing the practice)? Or, does he just know something that we don't? Because, if there are still a half-dozen top targets left on the board, he will have very little room to recruit those players by signing day - should all things remain as they are.

I would guess he anticipates at least one QB defection, it's tough for me to see all three of Allen, Laviano, and Rettig coming back next year given that all three have the chops to be a starting QB at some level in division 1, plus one of Resigno/Dare could depart knowing the staff (probably) prefers Odin/Lewis down the line.

Presumably other transfers will also open up room.

Chopin I used the roster on scarletknights.com along with the signing classes to see who is on ship and who isn't and also included a guy like Andre hunt who was a walk on but there were press reports that he earned a ship.

When some of the guys realize that they may not play under the new regime(ie someone who was brought in by CA will get the nod over someone recruited by the previous regime if it is a close position battle) you will loose a bunch.

Big boy recruiting, I'm confident that Ash has got everything figured out.

Here we go again with the annual "how many scholarships left" question. It always comes down to "it's anybody's guess". [eyeroll]

When I did that, I only came up with 66.

Took the sk.com roster, took out everyone with RS-Sr or Sr eligibility, added the 2016 guys listed in Rivals who weren't already there, and added Zach Allen (who was missing). Then went and marked all the guys who were in the Rivals classes as being on scholarship, and added the guys who were former walk ons like Hunt and Flanagan.

That'd give 19 open right now, with likely more turnover during the coming year.

I'm fully expecting a class of at least 28 this year.

Two guarantees on this board
People will ask how many scholarships are left
People will underestimate the number of scholarships available

Then next time I hear a coach say "I really wanted that kid but we simply didn't have room" will be the first time. We all know we are going to have players transfer and I've even heard a name or two that will come as quite a surprise. Point being, there is more than enough room.

Vkj- I don't think there is a concern that they will "over sign." I'm just trying to figure out how many they could sign. I don't get the negativity in trying to understand what that could be in June.

Choppin, I went through it all again and copied and pasted the lists as well as add the guys you mentioned and a guy like kiy Hester. I come down to 16 (vs your 19).

that's my point they can sign as many as they want. There is no negativity in trying to understand what could be. However, it would be easier just to accept that nobody knows and any prediction is a simply a guess.

Something that Coach Schiano use to say when asked this same question at Touchdown Club meetings. NO ONE knows how many scholarships are available except me, not even the recruiting coordinator. I tell him to keep recruiting until I tell him to stop. So any fan trying to get an accurate number is wasting their time.
