Why aren't there two divisions, like football? Or why not disband the 2 divisions all together (in football) and just take the two teams with the best records for the championship?

Seems like we get screwed every year: this year double Perdue, MSU.

Are there protected teams that must be played each year? If so...which teams are we locked into?
I would have thought Maryland / Ped State....but seems like only one against the latter.

Thanks

Next year starts the 20 games in-conference schedule (increase by 2 conference games). There will be 3 in-state protected rivalries - teams play each other twice every year.
For Rutgers there will be a regional component, most likely with Penn State and Maryland (not yet announced) where we play these regional opponents twice 4 out of a 6 years cycle.

"The new schedule will also include a regional component to increase the frequency of games among teams in similar areas. Over the course of a six-year cycle (12 playing opportunities), in-state rivals will play each other 12 times, regional opponents will play 10 times, and all other teams will play nine times."
