on the bball board no less...football has me really discouraged right now.

But my original introduction to RU sports was through basketball games with my Dad at the RAC. And right now, we both have something we haven't had for bball in a long time...hope. It's early yet, but the hype regarding this coaching staff seems to be legit. Funny...all the coaching hype seemed to be with Ash and crew, while Pike was just an afterthought..until he hired a killer staff. Think Hobbs made a crucial mistake with Ash, but at least bball seems in great hands.

I think the verdict is still out on Ash and I hope moving forward he proves to be a good one for us. But Pikiell and staff are the real deal, because Pikiell took a moribund program at Stony Brook and turned them into perennial winners.

Not only that, he has instilled a new attitude in a team that was a laughingstock last season. It's hard to believe the change in less than a year. And the chemistry is awesome- what a fun group to cheer for.
Ash, meanwhile, has given me no reason to hope. At all. I know he's got to wait for his own players to come in, but the team has regressed mightily. On lines full of seniors that have talent.

Pikiell's and Ash's eventual legacy will be 100% based on how well they recruit. Too early to canonize or castigate either.
Canonize agree. Castigate Ash- yes. This season has been a disaster of biblical proportions. Pike has done a LOT more with less. Recuriting aside, Ash has done nothing with more.

One is an experienced Head Coach (Pike) the other is at his first HC gig (Ash) so it's hard to be as harsh in year one. It's often said it's quicker to turn around a basketball team, too.

These opponents have been the equivalent of Howard and -- maybe -- New Mexico in football, so the results aren't much different. I agree that there's a noticeable difference in basketball despite some rough halves. Football a mixed bag. The bad losses in football are a mixture of high risk/high reward big picture decisions and a roster with many holes.

Depaul is 3 and 1 and we beat them on the road. Say what you want about them but we were 3 point underdogs going into that game and won in dominant fashion(Game was not as close as the score showed).

You are correct, 5 wins against teams with losing records.

Basketball are two totally different beasts.

We play in the hardest division in the country in football.

Ash was left nothing. Pike was a least left something and recruited immediate players. Much easier in hoops.

Hoops is a sport that can turn in a year. With a completely decimated football team, it takes much longer. And in this division, longer than that.

Give Pike credit. A lot. But he isn't facing top 10 teams every week.

Ash may not be the answer, but we won't have a clue for 3 years outside of one aspect- recruiting.

I like what Pike has done with the team, but they have not beaten a team with a winning record.
Yeah I guess you do not count a lousy DePaul team on the road who is 3-1. I would agree DePaul will struggle this year but don't let facts get in the way.! !!!

De Paul is not a good team by any metric. The team is winning the games it should win and would have lost last year...RU would likely be 3-3/4-2 with Jordan. But again RU has basically beaten the Howards of the world in football. Compare the two coaches once the conference season is over.

However I always keep hearing its easier to win in hoops than football, not sure I agree, Remember RU football has every single insitutitional advantage and financial advantage that football does not have, across the board. So if Pike comes in and gets this program to 500 he has done a phenomenal job and Ash a poor one given what they came into. Its not like football was in the Shea era last year. Meanwhile hoops has been the worst P5 program for almost a decade.

Pike has a lot more talent then Ash on his team. SP inherited the best players on the team in Freeman and Johnson. Both of whom did not play last year due to injury and red shirt. SP does get credit for bringing in Gettys as a nice addition as well as Thiam.

Bac, I corrected Pat who said we did not beat anyone with a winning record. We both agree that DePaul is lousy but it was a road win. Very similar to last year's early game at St. John's where we blew a 18 point lead aided by getting hosed by the refs. There is no disagreement that Eddie was deficient in 3 point defending but we seem to have the same problem this year as the guards are sagging too much and we cannot recover on the kick out . That has to be fixed as our bigs can defend without needing help so the guards should stay home .
Regarding your other point about what can turn around quicker, I always thought it would be basketball too but I have been waiting 20 years for Rutgers to recruit 3 studs but it has not happened. More importantly , hiring the right coach and right coaching staff is more important if you are not going to be getting the studs. It looks like basketball has hit a home run with Pikiell and it helps that Hobbs opened the purse strings and paying 2 assistants, Hobbs and Knight $300,000 each.

I already addressed that, 5 wins against teams with losing records. I love the direction of the basketball program.

Cool. The basketball team is showing signs of life so you come back to this board after abandoning it to be a fair weather fan and bash the football coach at the same time. I'll assume if the basketball team suffers some setbacks you'll quickly reverse course and quickly dissappear again.

What is this more you speak of? Can't be talking about talent and depth. Ash is paying for all the stuff you and others were screaming about with Flood. There wasn't going to be some kind of magic turnaround.

I'm thrilled with basketball's start but what do you think the record would be if RU had played Kentucky, Nova, Duke, and UNC because that's comparable to what football has faced.

Anyway, it's nice to see a fellow WO guy back. Hope your students didn't have to pay too much on Mondays for RU's performance on Saturdays.:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

the opening of purse strings for assistants is a huge tangible sign that RU cares somewhat about hoops...intersestingly enough RU went on the cheap with money for assistants in football so once again to me I question did Barchi really change all that much. Pikiell can coach and if he can get this team to 500 thats when we will see the recruiting kick in. With Jordan he got a piece here or there but the overwhelming amount of losing killed any hopes of landing an entire top class

Even more than that, one (Pikiell) is surrounded by top-notch, proven and experienced assistants at every level, while the other (Ash) has inexperienced assistants at some critical positions.

Wrong. Been following the football team all year...watching every game. I didn't care about the record this year...all I wanted was improvement. All I got is regression. I see no hope.
Conversely, I see improvement with the bball team and hope, to boot. Win loss record means nothing this year either...we play with a purpose. What does the football team play with?

We had VETERAN lines with talent. And they have played beyond awful. And good running backs.
Hypothetical question about the other teams...so won't answer.
Ha! I've become numb to the losing to be honest so I havent worn it on my sleeve. I just don't know why the team has failed so badly and on EVERY level.

Temple lost to New Hampshire and UCONN to Wagner. Winning games we should be winning.
