BB Recruiting 2025 California PG Lino Mark commits to Rutgers Basketball

Seems like a decent recruit who is likely to develop and contribute later in his college career. The type of kid Pike has done well with in the past. I just wonder if that approach works anymore with unlimited transfers and NIL. TBD

Need some
Guys to stick around and maintain some culture and experience on the roster. Mixed in with the transfers and one-and-dones (hopefully).

Unfortunately not the landscape of today's college basketball. Until the NCAA or some other entity steps in it is going to basically be like pickup games at the Y every year. Very few kids are going to stick around on a year to year basis - they will go to the highest bidder - and who can blame them? There is no repercussions or penalty for these kids leaving - desperately needs to be regulated - it totally ruins the product.

Wow, according to the article Mark is a radiant 3 point shooter, has a manipulative one on one arsenal, and purity of vision. This has levitated him into the upper crust. 🤦‍♂️

Seen lots of HS bball games thru the years in So Cal….so proud to hear an athlete commit to RU. Outstanding job by RU staff (met Coach Williamson) & congrats to Lino Mark!! Great game tonite.

Some sites have him listed as a 4 star and top 125 player.
This makes more sense. It’s understood that “stars” are taken with a grain of salt and Pike seems to have a better knack than most in identifying underrated recruits. However, this is a new world, and it almost makes no sense to recruit high school players who can’t contribute immediately. “Projects” and kids who need time are better fits for mid-majors nowadays. If/when they develop there, they will then be plucked by the major conferences.

After listening to the podcast, a little perplexed about this commit.

Sounds like the biggest selling point was "we'll let you do whatever you want on offense".
Some mid-majors were finalists for him as well because they said the same thing.

Meanwhile other high majors were cut from his list because they wanted him to buy into their offensive system and "earn" it first.
I would have thought that would describe Rutgers/HC Pike approach.

I understand telling Harper (a Top 3 recruit) he's in charge as a freshman.
But Mark is a very small PG who is approx 150th in the country.

Perhaps they are anticipating JWill (and perhaps JMike) leaving and plan on giving the offense to Mark next year as a freshman?

Lot of questionable statements in this post.

Bottom line there will be many roster changes next year based on lack of eligibility, leaving early for the NBA and NIL transfers.Three star recruits must be supplemented by higher level talent from the transfer portal. The B1G Ten will have many teams competing to just make the top 10 league teams .Player development is replaced by NIL transfers who are talent ready.

Not exactly what I took away from the podcast haha.

As others have said, he's top 125 in some other rankings. My biggest concern is I hope he puts on some good weight before he shows up on campus. 6' 2", 170# doesn't sound like a guy that is ready to compete physically for a full year in the B1G unless he is insanely quick.

Other than that, in Pike we trust! Welcome, Lino!

We will lose Ace, Dylan, Martini, Acuff, and Hayes for sure. Assuming everybody stays who can stay -- which is a gigantic assumption in the NIL/transfer portal era -- here is what our team looks like next year SO FAR:

G - JMike, LMark
G - JWill (if he stays a 6th year), Derkack
WF - ??
F - Grant, Dortch
C - Sommerville, Ogbole, Ware

We have a HUGE need for wings/shooters for next year, plus we need to hope JMike, Derkack, and Grant develop as shooters.

I think you're misunderstanding what I said, I'm saying that Pike's offense at Rutgers allows guys to play their game. Rather than a square peg in a round hole type of situation, the offense at Rutgers allows guys to play the way that they like to play.

He isn't being handed anything on day one at all, he will have to earn every minute he gets. He is a four year development type of player. He has some upside on offense yes, but his game is far from refined.

My expectation is that the basketball team will look like the football team in terms of the portal strategy. Focus on solid high school recruiting, have enough NIL to keep the players you’ve got, develop them, and add in a couple strategic portal guys to fill gaps.

We got caught flat footed two years ago. But I think over time the massive turnover last couple years will be seen more as a fluke for Rutgers than the norm.

So I think it’s likely we keep most of the guys we have. We add one or two people of the caliber of a Acuff, Durcack, Hayes, martini, and hopefully the collective can pull enough money to bring in one high-level plug-and play contributor.

With above average coaching and development, that’s gonna be a solid tournament team most of the time. I have a lot of confidence and in Pike and the program right now.
