I know many of you have had these kinds of chats with PSUers, but I needed to share mine with the group
Let me set the stage: I attended a day-wedding last weekend for my wife's friend up in Tarrytown, NY. Wedding wrapped up around 5 and I rushed to the "after party" at a bar so I could catch the end of the Rutgers-Indiana game (which was shaping up to be big). I get to the bar, ask the bartender to turn on the game and he tries to do it, but of course they don't have the BTN. Disappointed, I slide down in my chair with my gamecast going on my phone and the Michigan St-Michigan game on throughout the bar as my consolation prize
Enter PSU Pisser: Myself and two other rutgers alums, as well as a Wake Forest alum (4 of us total) who all attended the wedding are sitting at a table, huddled around a TV taking in the MSU -Michigan game and furiously updating gamecast during the Rutgers comeback, when we are approached by a guy in a throwback mets jersey (awful jersey btw..was a primer for our conversation).
He comes over to our group and the following exchange takes place (our responses in italics, his dialogue in regular text):
"So, you guys Big ten fans or college football fans"
"Both. We're Rutgers alums"
"You guys are all Rutgers alums?" (in a surprised voice, like it's weird that you'd find 3 rutgers alums at a rutgers wedding, 1.5 hours north of campus)
"Yeah."
"Cool. I went to the Penn state - Rutgers game last year"
"Oh yeah? You a penn state grad"
"Yup"
"How was the atmosphere?"
"I've been to all 14 B1G stadiums for Penn State games, and your atmosphere was by far the most hostile of any I've ever been to. F-you this, and F-you that"
"Welp, sorry about that, but in general we are pretty good to visiting fans"
"I'm sure you guys are, you seem like good guys, but the fans were just horrible. A real disgrace"
"What I meant was, as a collective, our fanbase is good to any fanbase that is not PSU"
"Oh. Who is your guys rival? You don't really have one, right?" (egging us on to say PSU)
"Maryland. Who is yours?
"Well yeah, because Michigan is sort of a rival and so is MSU, but we don't have a real rival"
"You guys are rivals with yourselves...past PSU teams, right?"
"What do you mean?"
"I thought you were unrivaled?"
"Oh yeah, I guess... You guys live in the city? I'm from long island. I go into the city alot for penn state games because there are whole penn state bars. Where do you guys watch games?"
"We watch Rutgers games all over. NYC is a Rutgers town if it's any college-town. We have 4 of the top 5 highest rated college football games in NYC"
"Oh yeah?"
"yeah"
"Well I hope you guys get a team again soon"
(END)
That was the end of the conversation. These are the kinds of conversations I have with PSU people. Just totally unconstructive. We don't talk about the league, we don't exchange pleasantries on good players or games, we just engage in this kind of banter.
He went away and we continued watching the MSU-Michigan game when that ridiculous, absurd punt play happened. Of course he rushed over and we ignored him. We also got really jacked up when we came all the way back to win. Just, really awful people out there.
