The 954
other than portal pickups, are these interior DL available for 2025?

Keshon Griffin sr.
henry hughes sr.
JaSire Peterson Jr.
Aaris Bethea So.
Zaire Angoy Sr.
Jordany Augustin Sr.

You have Kyle, a 4* DT coming in. You may not want to burn a redshirt but it's an option.

I'm guessing Rutgers is gonna use one or both of the excellent DT prospects in this year's recruiting class....Braxton Kyle and Jyon Simon as true freshmen.
Very rarely do DTs get action as true freshman. Are they coming in in January?

A lot of the recruiting people think highly of the DL class this year, especially the 2 DTs Kyle and Simon. However, it’s rare for DL’s to make an impact as true freshmen. RU will probably look to hit the portal hard for some experienced DLs for 2025. It’s an area of need.

A lot also think highly of the LB class this year.

Do any of them play in their freshman year?
I'm not gonna guess, but some of them will at least play special teams.
Curious as to whether Rutgers has ever started a true freshman at linebacker.
Again, this is the most talented group of LBs I've ever seen in one class here.

RU will target DTs in the portal as they have every year. True game changing DTs cost a bit so expect it to be more career backups that have the ability to start.

The two incoming freshman have a chance to be part of the rotation at some point during the season.

Hughes hasn't really played in his time on the banks, he's probably portal bound.

Surprised we have not seen Petersen. Hopefully he steps up next season. Highly recruited DL 2 years ago ..Nebraska, Illinois offers.
I'm surprised about Peterson as well. i saw him a number of times in high school and was pleasantly surprised when he chose Rutgers. The fact that we didn't see him at all this year...at a position where we could have used some help...is not a good sign.

The jump from HS to college is large for most OL/DL especially when you play in a top power conference. Between S&C, technique, footwork, hands, etc. it's not uncommon for lineman to take two years before they are ready to contribute. Keshon Griffin, for example, only started making noise this year, his fourth year in the program.

The two incoming freshman have the chance to make some noise, but you will see that they are at a different level compared to Peterson and Bethea, both in build and ability.

DL Sydir Mitchell of Univ of Texas (fromNJ) in class of 2022 declared for portal yesterday. Probably lot of teams go after him but so should we.

Never worry about burning a RS anymore. Play a kid in the first 4 games and if he can handle it- that’s what you are paying him for.
If he isn’t ready- you sit him unless injuries force your hand later.

As you said, "impact" is rare, but there's a chance in the rotation. Let's not forget we have Bethea and one of the Luman twins from the 2024 class.

Returning DT: Hughes (limited PT), Griffin (some PT the last 2 yrs), Peterson (hurt?), and Angoy (rotation guy last 2 yrs). I think Schiano gets at least one DT, maybe 2 if possible (NIL).

Unfortunately, we don’t have the financial support to land the Sydir Mitchell’s. We’re shopping in the bargain bin. While there’s always a chance that money isn’t a factor, not going to hold my breathe.

Makes me think of Aaron Lewis. Guys on elite teams with limited playing time can be an upgrade to us, incentive being a starter

I'm surprised this gets explained every year to no avail.

There's an old saying, "The closer you are to the ball, the longer it takes to adjust the game." It will help that the 2 DTs are enrolling early. That will help them to adjust to the S&C and school work and create good habits. There are exceptions to the rule. Kaleb Johnson started as a true freshman on the OL in 2011, so it's possible.
