Edelson rightly pointed out that it bothered us. Normally we would flash to the middle and lob it to Myles. Not possible with GarZa, obviously.

It never felt like we were in any rhythm in our offense after the early lead. A career night from RHJ and early hot shooting from Yeboah helped obviously. But their interior help on Myles, a still injured Geo, and a rare off night from Young hurt us. I still am not sure how we scored 80 points last night, all things considered.

It bothered guys like JY who relies on quick dribble penetration, but overall it did not deter RU's offense (80 points). Rather, it freed up Yeboah and Harper for some great looks from 3 that they knocked down with efficiency.

They really squeezed the area we wanted to enter. Not once did we hit Paul where we wanted. I believe we actually got a high post entry when Myles flashed.

We were in tremendous rhythm the entire first half and they couldn’t guard us all game . Our ball movement was excellent the first half and the first minute of the second half. Thereafter, when they were in zone our guards especially Geo and Young did a terrible job of staying too far out and not trying to penetrate it at the foul line . They both handled it poorly and good passing could have eaten it alive. We could have scored 95-100 if the 4 guards showed up like they normally do. Iowa was not stopping us.

This. Paul tried several times flashing to the foul line/high post area, but Iowa was really playing a 3-2 zone, and the three guys at the top really prevented the entry pass to Paul, and thereby completely took away our high-low game. I have to give Coach McCaffrey credit for designing a way to prevent the entry pass to the high post, as we had been pretty successful in that offense previously against standard 2-3 zones.

We were just fortunate that Kwasi and Ron were hitting from deep, otherwise this might have been a blowout loss.

We have enough players that we can find someone who will take what the D is giving us. They sold out to stop penetration. So we bombed from deep, and kept feeding thy guys that hit their shots.

Their zone frustrated our guards, and thankfully our forwards/centers stepped up.

Baker/Mathis/McConnell/Young/Mulcahy combined for 7-26 (.269) and just 20 points. They were 1-8 from the arc (12.5%) and 5-9 from the FT line (55.6%).

Yeboah/Harper/Johnson/Carter combined for 22-32 (.688) and 60 points. They were 6-13 from the arc (.462) and 10-12 from the FT line (.833).

We played their tempo!!! We usually dictate the tempo on defense but not last night.

Agreed great coaching from the whiny Fran. We killed it with Paul in the high post before when teams went zone, but they adjusted their zone to stop that entry pass and forced our guards very far out. Also killed Young's effectiveness. He really never got going and when Young gets going it is infectious to the rest of the team. Our guards played terrible and we still almost won.

What i don't know is if we could have been better moving the ball and eventually getting it in there OR Iowa just wasnt going to have it.

Guessing the later, but I'd have to watch again....probably more exciting than impeachment hearings but not something i care to do.

It’s fine if Paul flashes to the middle but he has to shoot or it doesn’t do anything to the zone if he makes a couple of shots that changes everything
