Ok, waited till this morning so I was not posting on emotion. In an early thread I had Iowa winning 19-17, said we needed to win 2 of 3(141,174,197). Even in a "down" year Iowa will probably still finish in top 8. I thought as a team RU wrestled hard, we are just not as good as the top teams.

125-NS-he is a machine and expect him to be in finals in a loaded weight class
133-SD-wrestled well, I think at worse he is a round of 12 guy again and hoping he breaks thru as an AA.
141-MVB-nice rebound win after Lock Haven. He will be solid this year
149-ED-he wrestled smart as his job was not to give up bonus. If I was Brands I would be upset at Sorensens last few matches. Still need more of a body of work to see what ED can do at Nationals
157-BD-he is just not a starter, fought hard but overmatched. JVB is certified here and I expect him at this weight at Midlands
165-RL-I am not as doom and gloom as some after this loss. The "Bull" is very strong and super conditioned. I still thought RL would win this match. Lets see how RL rebounds at Midlands
174-JG-I really thought the key to this match.....JG is up 3-0 late in 2nd period and took a bad shot and Gunther scored. JG has to be aware and make Gunther come to him.
184-NG-Nick was Nick, grinded out another win. Still obvious his shoulder is bad, he will still win most matches on toughness
197-BM-redshirt frosh at 197 is going to be tuff, needs another year in the weight room
Hwt-RG-he will be overmatched against top 15 guys. What I did not like last night is he went to his back without a fight.

Having this many holes is troubling. I know they're only RFr, but Grello and Mulligan have not progressed as many expected and are a big reason for the holes. They won't contribute much in the B1G. Very disappointing. Lewis will have a much harder time to AA at 165 and should go 157. Donner shouldn't be out there.

Wow... How about giving these guys more than 1 month on the varsity team before writing them off? SMH

They had an entire redshirt year too. Neither has shown anything that they will even be blood round guys let alone AAs. No aggression or offense. You won't win much like that. We need elite/top recruits to perform as such and compete for AA.

Both Grello and Mulligan need to get much stronger. During the match our group all said the same thing at various points. Many wondered if they ever lifted weights while at BC and questioned who our weight trainer is here. Get these two in the weight room asap. I think they can still both be good. But only if they get stronger because they're not that quick.

They need more than strength and weight room work.

This was a winnable match - had a couple things gone the other way we would have. Proud of our boys - they wrestled hard.

I'm not worried at all about Grello and Mulligan, I don't expect them to be round of 12 guys this year but still have faith that in a year or two they will be competing for AA honors.
What have you seen that supports that? I'm very worried. They've done nothing to show they're anywhere near that level.

Mulligan won 27 matches last year as an underweight puppy at 197 last year redshirting and Grello beat our starter at 174 who was ranked 14 or 15 in the country. I don’t know what you need to see to be hopeful of redshirt freshmen?

Pretty much this.

What did Theobold, Perotti, DelVecchio, and Gravina show during their first month as frosh? 2 made AA.. and the other 2 were 1 win away last year... Grello, and Mulligan were solid recruits.. But ur acting like they're blue chip busts already...Knock the crap off and give them a full season.. How many on here were questioning Correnti at this point last year?

They're top 100 recruits (#50 & #70) and both won back to back state titles to close out their HS careers. If expectations are to be blood round or contend for AA in year 4 or 5, then this program is in serious trouble. I need to see some semblance of offense and aggressiveness that they're trying to score more.

#50 and #70 are not exactly blue chippers, to me, and outside top 20 p4p recruits fresh aren't really expected to come in and AA right away. Grello beats #14 wrestler for starting spot and Mulligan won a lot of matches his redshirt year and is holding his own against top competition. I'd say they are both ready to qualify this year and be in it to AA next year.

Hopefully, you're right. I just don't see it right now.

I just wanted to make sure people do not take my post match summary the wrong way. I still think Grello and Mulligan will be good. I do not see Grello losing the spot the rest of the way. Gunther is tuff and as I stated above Grello made a tactical error when up 3-0. If he goes into the 3rd period up 3-0 it is a whole different match. Either Gunther has to take bottom(which it was obvious they did not want to do) or he would need to take Grello down twice in the 3rd.
Mulligan wrestled the #8 ranked kid at the weight(Flo rankings), you can see how Mulligan moves, he is pretty good on top, as I stated he just needs to get stronger and bigger. This will come.

Personally I can see Grello losing the spot, Pagano beat the Lock Haven kid 7-0 the week before Grello wrestled him and at the Black Knight Invitational Grello was down 2-1 before pinning him. Teammates wrestling each other never really prove much. Wouldn't consider Grello and Mulligan a bust seeing how both are just redshirt freshman.

I think Grello has a lot of upside. Been watching him since middle school, always been tough. Remember hes only a Fr and coming off an injury.

I don’t think the program is in trouble but most of the kids we have are developmental kids that will have a chance to AA in years four and five. I think Glascow can have an impact if he comes here next year and make some noise early but outside of him I don’t see any early impact recruits. Most top 20 guys are going to 5 or 6 schools Penn st , Oh state, Ok State, Iowa, Arizona St, U Minn, and sprinkle in some other Big Ten schools. Va Tech, Cornell, and Iowa State might have something to say about this with their changes. Rutgers needs to AA 2-4 kids every year and build up the SKWC and then we can attract some immediate impact guys right out of High School. We do have to get the NJ kids with immediate impact potential to stay home.

Grello looks good. Just need more experience, and he'll be top 15 soon. Mulligan appears raw still but he's also only a redshirt fresh. He appears to be very strong, so with experience he'll be very tough to beat. I'm interested in seeing them develop this season.
