@Iowa

Poor choice of words, but I think the suspension length is appropriate.

If you listen to the audio you can tell that he was just trying to convey that Bruno Fernando was just too big, strong and dominant late in that game.

When I first learned about it my knee jerk reaction was "Oh hell no, he can't be out here letting loose with a King Kong take when talking about a kid from Africa." Then I heard the audio and thought that he just made a poor choice of words. I try not to be one of these PC Nazis, but it was difficult this time not to react the way I did because I have known Fernando since he came to Montverde Academy several years ago.

Again, I’m not surprised in the slightest. And this guy is a “professional” out of all the Iowa sports fans and still says something like this. Shows you where his mind is at. Wouldn’t you say Chris Carlin and Ray Lucas more or less represents the RU fan base and our thoughts and feelings about the team. This guy has called Iowa football and basketball games for 22 years. Anyway. Some people just don’t understand

I think the punishment is completely appropriate-----just a terrible choice of words.

IMO Ray Lucas is awful.

Lucas is pretty honest. Carlin is over the top homer, which is fine when we are winning and have a team to be proud of. He predicted on wfan we would win 7 games last year .

He may not have meant anything by it but the world is changing rapidly and you need to take some responsibly to stay in it...especially with the job he has. Punishment fits the “crime” here.

When I think about King Kong I think about the video game. That could have easily be me saying that. Obviously with further thought it is wrong.

Having said all of that a 1 game punishment alongside a heartfelt apology would be appropriate.

Now if sounds like MCaffrey doesn’t like him and he said something bad about a player on live mic. There could be more here than meets the eye

I'm not black but it strikes me that a reasonable person could believe the comment was not meant as a racially disparaging comment but to describe how dominant and powerful Fernando was during the game. A "beast" as ProudNJ Sports Fan describes it above. Indeed aren't dominant rebounders often referred to as " beasts" on the backboards?

Pretty much this... I don't think Jon Teske would get the same comment but it seems like it was at least subconscious/unintentional.

I go both extremes. If there was a conscious racial overtone, fire him. If as Russ and others have suggested that in context it was a description of his beast-like game, then an apology for poor phraseology and move on.

Times have changed. Remember the days at the RAC in late 80’s when the students would pick a player on the visiting team, and almost always a white guy, and yell dork every time he got the ball. Also recall the cheerleader who would lead the student section in an unga, unga chant.

True. I also remember in the 1980’s the student section serenaded an overly hairy big man from Monmouth with a chant of “Shave your back!” when he was taking foul shots.
