me thinks that is redshirting unless we get two injuries at the center spot
Announcers mentioned a redshirt. Once Luke Nathan was put in, it’s obvious that’s what they’re trying to do.
Presuming Doorson can be healthy, you would have 3 scholarship players who can play center, even without Johnson, plus Nathan in an emergency: Doucore, Doorson and Sa. It might make a lot of sense to red shirt Johnson - giving him another year of weight room and conditioning, another year of basketball maturity and practice, plus space out front court scholarships.
Looks like the staff learned their lesson and/or value Johnson more long term by not inserting him into early season garbage time like they did with Bullock last year and burning his redshirt.Coach said at the Court Club that Myles is ready to play offensively and not ready to play defensively except for blocking some shots. Would seem to make sense to redshirt, barring injuries that necessitate him playing.
Also, did Luke Nathan get a scholarship offer somewhere? He looks like he could play somewhere.
Bullock with a DNP tonight when four walk-ons played plenty of minutes. Wow, kinda feel bad for him. Seems like he should look to transfer before next semester starts, right?Looks like the staff learned their lesson and/or value Johnson more long term by not inserting him into early season garbage time like they did with Bullock last year and burning his redshirt.
dont people on here say that if a guy redshirts theyre worthless?

The latter. No excuse this year.Either he was hurt or not in proper condition
Nathan was offered by a few Ivy League teams and I think a few other mid majors but he wanted to play at RU. I think he will be the 3rd center if Doorson ever suffers another injury. I am glad he is at RU.
How did Nathan look tonight?
I don't like it. How many fouls did Doucoure get in the first ten minutes against SJU? Now what's going to happen against the B1G? And then Shaq has been in foul trouble in the past as well. We will end up having games in which all our centers have either fouled out or is about to and our defense is going to suffer greatly. Or, that last center is going to have 5-10 minutes a game. Do you want it to be Nathan? In my opinion, we will lose games as a result of this decision.
I know, but at the same time he's playing the four, getting fouls there.Candido Sa is a third center. We have pretty good depth at the “5”.
Sa is not playing the four. He will be a pure backup 5. E have three guys playing center which allows Myles to redshirt. Redshirting bigs if you can makes total sense. We are not going to the tourney this year. This is a long term move.I know, but at the same time he's playing the four, getting fouls there.
That means in your scenario that Omoyuri is getting significant minutes at the four, which I am not a fan of either.Sa is not playing the four. He will be a pure backup 5. Bottom line is Johnson playing a few minutes a game at the four over Omoruyi or our walkon in a desperate situation doesn’t get us an extra win or two so give him the year to develop. That extra year could be HUGE when he is a dominant fifth year senior and we are a legitimate NCAA team. That could be the difference in 3 or 4 wins then. That means in your scenario that Omoyuri is getting significant minutes at the four, which I am not a fan of either.
Its not that, its the soft defense that will be played at end of games for fear of fouling out.Bottom line is Johnson playing a few minutes a game at the four over Omoruyi or our walkon in a desperate situation doesn’t get us an extra win or two so give him the year to develop. It's just my opinion, when you have a freshman center, you cannot rely on him getting too many minutes. That's what we are doing. I've said my peace now we will find out later in the season if I'm right or wrong. Hopefully I'm eating crow.

The fact that right now he looks to be a redshirt doesn't mean he can't be used later in the season. If situation pops up where he is needed, he will be used.I don't like it. What are you talking about? This post makes zero sense. Of course it is about giving him an extra year to develop with the hope that he grows and becomes a very good player as an upperclassman. If they just bought they could recruit over him hen you would play him and not waste the shipJohnson is likely going to be recruited over anyway going forward. I would not worry about what happens 4 years down the road. We all hope he develops and is a 4 year player because we want that upperclass leadership but I do not think its about saving a year. If the team needs him this year even for spot minutes, he is going to play
if they need him later in the year which they may given how injury prone Doorson is and the fear of excessive fouling by Doucoure, he is going to play...if Pike continues to recruit at the level he is yes he will be bringing in a player better than Johnson
I think it's both bac and shack here that have valid points, but every recruit doesn't need to be a starter to add value.I agree

I think the question isn't whether he can be recruited over or not (Doucoure on paper is a 2018 recruit that could be deemed "recruiting over" a 2017 recruit in Johnson), but Johnson (with a redshirt and 12 months of strength and conditioning here vs a potential 2018 big man recruit we don't have room for right now) makes sense.
Johnson is a big with talent, touch and smarts ....I seriously think similar to Shaq Doorson having two more years of eligibility right now, that Myles Johnson's best basketball is 3 to 5 years from now.....I'm willing to take my chances that he becomes a definite contributor in his 4th and 5th year with this staff. We would be starting Johnson's "clock" next year and if Shaq stays beyond this year, we are in much better shape than we believe....
