Johnson

Presuming Doorson can be healthy, you would have 3 scholarship players who can play center, even without Johnson, plus Nathan in an emergency: Doucore, Doorson and Sa. It might make a lot of sense to red shirt Johnson - giving him another year of weight room and conditioning, another year of basketball maturity and practice, plus space out front court scholarships.

Plus i like having big men seperate by class

Next year
Doorson is a senior
Carter is a junior
Doucoure is a Soph
Johnson will be a redshirt frosh

Coach said at the Court Club that Myles is ready to play offensively and not ready to play defensively except for blocking some shots. Would seem to make sense to redshirt, barring injuries that necessitate him playing.

Also, did Luke Nathan get a scholarship offer somewhere? He looks like he could play somewhere.

Looks like the staff learned their lesson and/or value Johnson more long term by not inserting him into early season garbage time like they did with Bullock last year and burning his redshirt.

I caught a lot of flak on this board saying Johnson wasn’t going to be an impact guy for us this year. He still has a “soft body” and will really benefit from having a full year to work with our strength and conditioning coaches. He’d get pushed around in the B1G and be marginalized. Might as well get 4 productive years out of him and not burn a year where he’d make a minimal impact. Long term potential and gains are there!

Bullock with a DNP tonight when four walk-ons played plenty of minutes. Wow, kinda feel bad for him. Seems like he should look to transfer before next semester starts, right?

When a player like Candido Sa is your #3 Center you take advantage and RS a kid like Johnson. Its a great move by this staff and another sign they know how to build a program at Rutgers.

Nathan was offered by a few Ivy League teams and I think a few other mid majors but he wanted to play at RU. I think he will be the 3rd center if Doorson ever suffers another injury. I am glad he is at RU.

Like RU's 4th Center, and a preferred walk-on.

Nathan will get emergency minutes this season, would be my guess, though I would not rule out him becoming a serviceable player in future years.

He is very tall, and not a stiff. RU has had worse players get more minutes than he will get, albeit against lesser competition than being in the Big Ten.

But he is just a freshman, so we should not expect much this year.

Four years are not guaranteed anymore after a red shirt with so many grad transfers. So we might only get three years of Myles Johnson if he red shirts this season.

I don't like it. How many fouls did Doucoure get in the first ten minutes against SJU? Now what's going to happen against the B1G? And then Shaq has been in foul trouble in the past as well. We will end up having games in which all our centers have either fouled out or is about to and our defense is going to suffer greatly. Or, that last center is going to have 5-10 minutes a game. Do you want it to be Nathan? In my opinion, we will lose games as a result of this decision.

Candido Sa is a third center. We have pretty good depth at the “5”.

I know, but at the same time he's playing the four, getting fouls there.
Sa is not playing the four. He will be a pure backup 5. E have three guys playing center which allows Myles to redshirt. Redshirting bigs if you can makes total sense. We are not going to the tourney this year. This is a long term move.

That means in your scenario that Omoyuri is getting significant minutes at the four, which I am not a fan of either.

Seels

I actually was in your camp, but I have changed my tune.

Freeman is playing 28- 30 minutes a game ...Eugene can play those other 10-12 mpg

Those two allow us at the four allow the faster tempo we want to play

Its all about Shaq. I was happy to see him moving around nicely last night and finally seems to be healthy. If we stay healthy at the 5, Myles uses his red shirt. This is probably the best long term scenario. It allows Myles to get his body ready for BIG action as well as practicing hard with our BIGS throughout the season.

Bottom line is Johnson playing a few minutes a game at the four over Omoruyi or our walkon in a desperate situation doesn’t get us an extra win or two so give him the year to develop. That extra year could be HUGE when he is a dominant fifth year senior and we are a legitimate NCAA team. That could be the difference in 3 or 4 wins then.

Its not that, its the soft defense that will be played at end of games for fear of fouling out.

It's just my opinion, when you have a freshman center, you cannot rely on him getting too many minutes. That's what we are doing. I've said my peace now we will find out later in the season if I'm right or wrong. Hopefully I'm eating crow.

As someone said, if things change SP still has the option to play him. So no big deal at this point.

That is exactly what's going to happen. Coach indicated he likes that, too. Eugene looks much more like a four this year. He's put on weight and I think that's the right place for him.

Johnson is likely going to be recruited over anyway going forward. I would not worry about what happens 4 years down the road. We all hope he develops and is a 4 year player because we want that upperclass leadership but I do not think its about saving a year. If the team needs him this year even for spot minutes, he is going to play

The fact that right now he looks to be a redshirt doesn't mean he can't be used later in the season. If situation pops up where he is needed, he will be used.

What are you talking about? This post makes zero sense. Of course it is about giving him an extra year to develop with the hope that he grows and becomes a very good player as an upperclassman. If they just bought they could recruit over him hen you would play him and not waste the ship

if they need him later in the year which they may given how injury prone Doorson is and the fear of excessive fouling by Doucoure, he is going to play...if Pike continues to recruit at the level he is yes he will be bringing in a player better than Johnson

I agree

I think it's both bac and shack here that have valid points, but every recruit doesn't need to be a starter to add value.

I think the question isn't whether he can be recruited over or not (Doucoure on paper is a 2018 recruit that could be deemed "recruiting over" a 2017 recruit in Johnson), but Johnson (with a redshirt and 12 months of strength and conditioning here vs a potential 2018 big man recruit we don't have room for right now) makes sense.

Johnson is a big with talent, touch and smarts ....I seriously think similar to Shaq Doorson having two more years of eligibility right now, that Myles Johnson's best basketball is 3 to 5 years from now.....I'm willing to take my chances that he becomes a definite contributor in his 4th and 5th year with this staff. We would be starting Johnson's "clock" next year and if Shaq stays beyond this year, we are in much better shape than we believe....

Then there's something the chaches know and we don't: Based upon practice and scrimmages: how great is the gap between Myles and Luke.

Some people are talking as though the decision for the whole season has already been made. Every game they have the opportunity to burn his Redshirt, if they feel that's needed. There was absolutely no need for him to play that first game, and there won't be any need for him to play today. If the need never arises, then they have the opportunity to preserve a year of eligibility for him. If the need does arise to play him, at least they made the attempt to preserve that year. There's no downside to trying to Redshirt him.
