Those that say there are too many jobs open and we should wait until next year just don't get it. There are always going to be a lot of openings. This will be a game of musical chairs and some are more ready that others. We can't be the ones not ready. I'm sure Julie is focusing on the "reaches" and the ones that are realistic.
Interesting conversation on Sirius radio this morning that it's rare that coordinators work out as first time head coaches in P5 conferences. Herman and Narduzzi are exceptions to the rule. Almost every successful head coach at a P5 program was a head coach before getting there. With that said, I still think guys like Sanford, Durkin, Frost... could be worth the risk. If we go head coach, then we're talking about Rhule, Golden, Schiano (not my favorite) and the MAC coaches. My biggest concern is Virginia (and Illinois) where there is likely to be an opening. We should vet out (or already have vetted out) who is really interested in the Rutgers job. We just don't have the resources to compete with a Maryland, Syracuse, Illinois or Virginia if it's a money play.
Syracuse has an AD that came from Boise State and he is proactive. He will probably go after Sanford. It's still an ACC job. I know Golden has his detractors, but the guy walked into a nightmare. He's a local guy who was a great recruiter at Virginia, Temple and Miami. I'm sure he'll get interviews at Virginia, Syracuse and Temple if Rhule moves on. He's been a head coach and understands what it takes to be a CEO. So does Rhule and Schiano. I'm not sure the MAC coaches are good fits, other than maybe Fleck. We can't drag our feet here. I'm optimistic that Julie knows this and is prepared for the search.
