1) We might just have something in Taj White. I was talking about him this preseason as I know the staff is high on him but yesterday he split reps with Kamar Missouri at RT and did a heckuva job. He's super athletic for his size, moves well and you can see he's oozing with potential. Hopefully he's our #1 at RT here on out and becomes a 3-4 year starter. He's only getting better.
2) Kyle Monangai: What more can we say. This kid is the heart and soul of this team. He is a little wrecking ball and just refuses to go down. When I knew Sam Brown was going to be out at the beginning of the year, I really wasn't too concerned because Kyle is nails. Him and Benjamin are a good one-two punch at RB.
3) Jaquae Jackson. Would've been easy for him to be frustrated ending the day with 0 receptions but we were real close on hitting him on a deep ball in the end zone that was just overthrown but what really stood out to me was his blocking. These things don't go down in the stat sheet but are often the difference between winning and losing games. Check out these two blocks he throws on the first TD run. Without him, this play is probably blown up at the line of scrimmage.
4) Passing Offense: It's a concern. Va Tech dared us to throw and we just couldn't. They lined up at 11 defenders within 8 yards of the line of scrimmage and just said beat us through the air. Gavin had his worst game this season for us today and to knock off some of our better opponents he's going to have to be better throwing the football.
5) DB's: Dez Igbinosun really struggled tackling yesterday. He whiffed on 3-4 tackles where the offensive player went on to gain in some instances 10+ additional yards. Have to clean that up. On the flip side, Lusardi looked pretty good when he had to come in for him when Dez went down. Max keeps getting beat deep, not sure why but it's happening it seems every game this year.
6) Defensive Scheme: Seems like we played a variation of quarters alot where our safeties had the #2 receiver to their side which allowed va tech to dink and dunk us for 8-10 yards a pop. If we do that vs michigan they'll crush us through the air and also beat us deep as when they isolate safeties they usually run corner posts/post corners and create explosive scoring plays. Needs to be cleaned up before Saturday.
