Kevin Warren To Bears

a bit foolish if he goes unless the Bears are paying him some insane amount. Going from one of the most powerful entities in sports to a bottom of the barrel franchise with very little upside.

i don't see this a foolish.. he has been in professional sports before and joining the Bears to build a new stadium would be more enticing given he has already negotiated the BIG10 TV contract...

It's unusual for a sitting commissioner of a Power 5 conference to interview for a professional sports job and stay engaged in a process this long, which sources said is indicative of Warren's interest level. He has worked in the NFL as both an agent and a team executive. When he left the NFL, Warren was the highest-ranking NFL executive working on the business side for a team.

I was wondering if this was considered a better job than the commissioner of the B1G. Sounds like the Bears are either planning another renovation to Soldier Field or looking to build something entirely new. I guess this would be his primary responsibility. The Halas family do not seem to be overbearing and they certainly have not had much recent success. If he is looking for leverage to get a new deal to stay as commish, it might work. I wonder if the OSU AD would be a candidate to replace him. He seems very influential.

I'd poach Phillips from the ACC away. B1G is higher on the pecking order than the ACC.

new stadium.....also Soldier Field may be used by Northwestern when Northwestern builds a new stadium..

‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎In September 2021, the Chicago Bears signed an agreement for the purpose of acquiring 326 acres of property in Arlington Heights to secure the potential of beginning a new and exciting chapter there. We remain under contract to purchase the property, but there are conditions that must be met in order to be in a position to close. If we do close on the property, it does not guarantee we will develop it. While under contract with the seller of Arlington Park, we will not be discussing or exploring any other alternative stadium sites or opportunities, including renovations of Soldier Field. Much remains to be decided, but any decision will be made in the best interests of the Bears long-term future, our fans and the Chicagoland community.
‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎If the team does proceed with the purchase of the Arlington Park property, and if the Bears organization then chooses to proceed with the development of the property, the project will be one of the largest development projects in Illinois state history. We envision a multi-purpose entertainment district anchored by a new, best-in-class enclosed stadium, providing Chicagoland with a new home worthy of hosting global events such as the Super Bowl, College Football Playoffs, and Final Four.

Warren played Phillips like a fiddle. Warren had Phillips, and the Pac-12 commissioner, go against their instincts and better judgment helped the B1G to end up as the beneficiary. Warren may not be liked by many, but he's good at getting favorable deals because he reads the room well. You want that type of person on your side. We praise the previous B1G commish ( Delany) as one step ahead of everyone else, but Delany saw the same qualities in Warren but with more business savvy.

i wasn't crazy about Warren prior to this year, but you have to give him a lot of credit for the USC and UCLA additions. They are huge, and it showed he wasn't afraid and was willing to be aggressive. The TV deal he finalized seem favorable as well, and I give him credit for executing it. But some of that praise is tempered by the fact that it was a great situation for anyone to negotiate. That said, he did a great job negotiating it and didn't f' it up. He has come on strong this year.

Phillips was seen as a favorite when Warren got hired but the trend has been for executives outside CFB lately. Warren, Kliavkoff, and Yorkmark were outside of college athletics. The new NCAA prez Charlie Baker, former Mass governor, is also from outside college athletics.

Totally with you. Never understood the Warren angst by many on this board. He came with a great resume at a very difficult time and followed a legend. He still got a lot accomplished.

Thought he did a great job. The deals he was able to pull off were very easy to f’up last minute. Poise and patience were demonstrated.

I look at USC/UCLA as he didn't do enough. Only half of that deal is done as more teams need to join from the West Coast. No plan going forward. USC/UCLA getting full shares was a bad move too. The rumored deal without them vs with them barely covers their shares. Then add in lesser TV value teams and the rest of the Big Ten is going to be paying them.

Grabbing USC & UCLA is probably the first step in Warren's West Coast takeover plan.
The full share might seem steep, but if it brings on controlling the West Coast TV Market from Southern California to Washington, it will be worth the price
The PAC will be negotiating their TV rights in 2024 and with those two programs out of he picture the PAC doesn't have as much to offer an a far smaller payout will be the result.
Making it easier to poach any PAC program the B1G goes after and have the California regents asking for the B1G to take the remaining Cal schools while the rest of PAC asks for admission.
Warren looked past bringing in those two and realized once they were in, opportunity to control TV sets all along the West Coast was possible and have the schools begging to join.

Warren said shortly after the announcement of USC and UCLA joining the B1G, the door to expansion isn't closed. Warren said any deal is always built around timing, the right situation (teams), and TV partners. He said long before adding any team to the B1G, he did an in-depth analysis of all teams and what value they added to the B1G. IMO, Warren likely thinks some teams have to increase their value (to the media) and appeal. I know people would love to see Washington in the B1G, but they haven't been relevant in a long time.

Warren's successor needs to lock up the West Coast with Cal/Stanford/Oregon/Washington should he leave. B1G would control 6 of the Top 7 media markets in the US with the Bay Area and 9 of the Top 10 schools with the most living alums would be B1G schools.

The problem with poaching other West Coast teams for TV is that viewership sucks. It like teams in Florida. Nobody gives a rats ass.

I never said the door to expansion is closed. Actually I said it was necessary! Pay attention. He admits to expansion but no plan. Please tell me the next West Coast team that will fully cover their own addition. The PAC 12 deal was a disaster for a reason.

PAC basically only had the West Coast time zone to work with.
The B1G after taking control of the West Coast will have control of EST,CST and PST
controlling the sports TV programing in those time zones and bringing West Coast teams
to sections outside of the time zone they are located in and bringing Eastern and Midwest programs to the West Coast gaining far more nationwide TV interest in the college football landscape for B1G West Coast programs than the PAC was able to do as a mainly western time zone TV attraction.
BTN double headers will become triple headers ,for it's viewership

Why are you so uptight? 😁 Lost in posting on the internet are the flow of the conversations and the context of what is being said. I agree with you. My point was to add to what you were saying.

I was not a Warren fan but he eased my concerns with the USC and UCLA additions.

What I also found fascinating per the above tweets is that Warren is actually a proponent of even more schools joining the conference which I am as well

Probably frustrating Warren is the Neanderthal thinking of many of the University Presidents whose athletic vision leaves a lot to be desired in this conference

If Warren does leave for the Bears gig, I would like to see Delany return or Phillips from the ACC via Northwestern take the helm.

I wonder why so many people are high on Phillips? Warren exposed Phillips when he convinced the ACC and Pac-12 to form an alliance to block the SEC/ESPN from pulling a power move. In the end, he caught the ACC and Pac-12 with their pant down when Warren made a power move on USC and UCLA. If not for B1G presidents, Warren would have pushed hard for two more teams (ND and ACC) and said, "checkmate."

I'm not uptight at all. Your post seemed to be uptight supporting Warren on this move. Talking on a thread loses a lot. So my bad. I'd rather be sitting at a bar talking about topics like this. Great topic. I have no issues adding USC_UCLA. Unfortunately the rest of the story is completely unknown, so I give Warren an incomplete on this move. In my years at RU I never got an incomplete grade lol

Agreed. One Billion Dollars. 'Nuff said .....
Will you be happy that the Rutgers future payoff is cut because Stanford and Cal don't bring in the same $$ as RU did? USC/UCLA barely covered the Big Ten payout.

It's not impressive if it's just those two. That will never work. Maybe that's why he wants to return to the NFL.
Won’t work for who ?

The conference ? The Big 10 got 2 marquee teams in virtually all sports without taking in any dead weight whatsoever, 2 well regarded academic institutions and locked up the biggest media rights deal in history. It’s already worked for the conference.

The sports teams ? All Big 10 teams removed 2 garbage games from schedule and replaced with 2 of the most recognizable teams in the nation.

USC and UCLA ? Those schools have already done the math and made the east decision that it does work.

The idea that this “will never work” is pure hogwash. Instead, its an absolute grand slam.

You're making a lot of assumptions. Part of deal Warren cut was to renegotiate dollars for new adds. As to who those new adds may be in the future, no one on this board knows.

Who knows if Stanford and/or Cal will get an invite. Same for Washington and Oregon. As for Stanford and Cal, they do not bring a NYC market, but they still have a market in which there is money beyond TV money (donors with dollars). Regular facetime with those individuals also leads to dollars in university coffers. And their academics will placate the academic side of the discussion if the University presidents still care about those things. But that is a big IF.

Could be dead wrong on Phillips but he seems to be quite intelligent and knows the conference. Plus he now has commissioner experience with ACC. Furthermore he probably knows which schools want to leave ACC and best / most proficient way to acquire them

I recall another candidate for commissioner when Warren was hired was a gentleman who was instrumental with the big 10 network forming. Forget his name

Regardless should Warren depart, I hope next commissioner is acquisition oriented visionary and is a facilitator in acclaimating new schools into conference etc.

found this July 01st, 2022 article that might be of interest in the West Coast expansion speculation over what do the other PAC programs add if they go B1G
Analyzing the New NCAA Power Five Television Markets
Since the Big Ten’s recent expansion is thought to be fueled by Fox (just as the SEC’s expansion last summer was thought to be driven by ESPN), it’s worth examining how the realigned Power Five now stacks up in terms of TV market size.

Mark Silverman is his name and he's the president at Fox Sports now.

They are both elite properties. Enough said. And no reason to rush the next move. Where exactly are those teams going? If we wanted them that much, they would already be in. Let the landscape unfold first before rushing the next move. There may ultimately be better options.
