Kevin Willard, players react following loss to Rutgers

He was pretty complimentary of us, but his whining about the schedule is weird. Two straight games on the road...hardly unusual. You'd think this was the end of a 5 game road swing.

2 games in a row on road…that’s a problem ?

As said above - if it was some type of extended stretch … but 2? Come on.

If the Big10 could come up with the possible “perfect” schedule (Willard’s mind) where you switch home-away-home-away I wonder if he would find a reason to complain about that

Not a good look

He’s whining because his team ****ing blows

You almost would have thought they won by listening to that if you didn’t know. He had to bring up how “we beat them” last year (SHU)

This is why I love Steve pikiell. He would never act like this douche.
One hundred times THIS. So many other coaches make it easy to dislike them in their press interactions. Like they resent having to spend time talking to those idiots (meaning the coaches act like they think the media are idiots).

Pikiell, Painter so few seem like even decent guys. Seems like an important part of the job that most guys just blow off. Don't recruits and their parents watch this stuff?

Willard hasn't won at the RAC since Dec 2015.

And he desperately hates to give us any credit. We're covering our 'offensive woes' with
pressure defense, according to him. Which by the way, requires just as much effort and athletic skill and
CONDITIONING as the offense side of the equation. Fix your team Kevin. Stop making
excuses

He’s not wrong though, forcing turnovers allows us to not have to play vs set defenses. Our half court offense is still a bit worrisome at times

I think he is mostly accurate. Without breaks from steals and turnovers produced by our defense, our offense would look pretty terrible. We don't flourish in the traditional half court offense and our pressure takes heat off our half court defense (which is still very very good).

But that's also how our offense is designed. We get points on the break and the offensive glass.... which are things that require effort and a lot of practice to get right. We don't flourish 1v1 - and a doubling zone takes Omoruyi out of his game, but our offense is flexible to find other ways to get points.

You don't need 85 points to win a game - you just need one more than the other team.

Isn't that what a good coach would do, maximize ones strengths to make up for ones weaknesses?

Willard was really unlikable in that presser. I hope that his team struggles this year and that his seat gets warm. I will root against Maryland in every game the rest of this season.

To me, our offense in our game looked a lot like what happened against Seton Hall,
The difference being that we eventually strung enough points to get distance between Maryland and maintain

We are a very good team that can look pretty mediocre on offense, yet win

I watched as some of the Iowa game after the bad beginning of Iowa, and both teams seemed to score repeatedly, much unlike our game
I thought both teams might wind up in the 90’s… shots didn’t roll off the rim, they went in. Etc
We have to clamp down on Iowa of course

We play a style that nobody wants to play against. Pike recruits players that fit his style and he coaches them to be defensive-minded, tough and team oriented. Most other coaches call the same plays and coach similar way - it’s about the players they recruit. Pike reminds me of Izzo and John Thompson. And you know what, they are/were pretty successful and teams hated playing them also.

Iowa gave up 50pts in the first half... and won. They scored 51 in the second half.
They don't value each possession much at all because they have so many of them - it's a different level in terms of intensity, possession-wise.

The constant schedule complaints are baffling. Everyone in the league is dealing with the same stuff. If it's such a problem, he shouldn't have taken the payday and stayed at SHU.

Is Willard a moron or an imbecile?

Imbeciles—Those whose development is higher than that of an idiot, but whose intelligence does not exceed that of a normal child of about 7 years.

Morons—Those whose mental development is above that of an imbecile, but does not exceed that of a normal child of about 12 years

He complained about the schedule nonstop at Seton Hall, too. I guess he figured he might as well console himself with some extra dough.

The offense is what it is. There will be scoring droughts in every game and there will of course be better offensive days than others.

The more controllable difference was that we didn’t turn the ball over 19 times.

His (our) team is just not very good. The roster was in bad shape coming in for him. My own opinion, and I said this for a few years, is that all of the players turning pro after two seasons for so many years in a row just caught up to Maryland. They are not a blue-blood and can't sustain/survive that kind of talent drain. I think they're just having a re-set right now.

He may not have the likeable personality of some of his predecessors -- I can't tell yet. But with the recruiting class coming in, and a possible big addition to that being announced soon, I doubt his seat will get hot soon.
