Key Food

Any reports on this place? How is it? Are they doing well (or at least OK)?
If I wanted to be snarky, I'd call it a giant Bodega. There's nothing special about it other than the fact that it's downtown; no reason to make a special trip to go there if you normally shop elsewhere

Do you think it will survive?

I only go in there 2 or 3 times during the week after work so don't have the insight needed to make a sound judgement BUT with the closing of Pathmark in Edison and the A&P in North Brunswick, the seemingly competitive sales and the placement of more street-level parking, they have a better chance of doing so. Being better managed will also help.

Parking is my issue. Where do I park if I want to try this place out? Do you park in the deck and it's free?

2 hours free in the deck if you spend $15; free parking in front of the building and in front of the entrance to Ferren deck on church St. if you need to run in for 15 minutes.

Will try to do food shopping there in the future and report back.

So I have done food shopping at this place for a little over a month and am reporting back as promised.

Basically, they have a big selection of items but they really markup the prices on healthier choices, which hurts me because I shop healthy. They have a great variety of red meats but their chicken tasted rubbery sometimes and their milk would go bad after about a week. Parking isn't a problem, I was able to park on the street every trip but one and the deck was no biggie. They have some good deals on a few items but are more expensive than Shop Rite on about 90% of the things I would get. They obviously have a large selection of asian and spanish items, and they sell wine and spirits in the store too (nice perk).

I came away thinking they can take some of Stop n Shops business in Somerset or maybe to pick up tailgating items but I don't see myself going here every week unless I'm in a hurry or I need a bag of items. The products are marked up too much compared to Shop Rite and not all of the every day items are as good. Lastly, playing music on the spanish station isn't doing anyone any favors. They don't need the locals, they need the yuppies. The locals can just walk up the street to the bodega on French St.

It's not a terrible place and I want it to succeed but they make it hard for me to shop there when I know I am paying more on almost every single item I buy. Maybe Shop Rite is just too good. Maybe they need a Shop Rite in New Brunswick to solve the problem?

Actually the Fresh Grocer joined the Wakfern Coop and the store was closed in large part because Shop Rite would not consent to a name change due to conflicting terretory control by more senior operators

The driver escorts customers opting for delivery to one of the two vans waiting in front of the store, after the customer has paid for the order. The driver then loads the groceries into one of the Key Food logo-printed Ford vans, then drives the groceries to the patron’s home, giving the customer a ride back home from Wellness Plaza as well.

Sounds like an alternative to Uber. After getting off the train, I stop at the market, pick up a few things for dinner, and then get a free ride home.
