At the completion of camp we were told that the Hester and Jacobs competition was very close but the more experienced Jacobs would get the starting job. Jacobs plays the first 2 games, performs adequately but gets injured and has to sit out games 3 and 4. Enter Kiy Hester...after 2 games as the starter it is clear that Hester is a playmaker and significant upgrade over Jacobs. Not wishing injuring on any player but it is ironic that if Jacobs does not get injured he continues as the starter and Hester's game changing ability is possibly never realize.

My point here is that when you have 2 players and a very close competition based on practice and scrimmages, you never really know who will perform better in the actual game situations. Doesn't it makes sense to give both of those players an opportunity to see if one can actually outperform the other on game day? Are there any other positions where the competition was very close coming out of camp based on practice and scrimmages and the more experienced player was given the starting nod?? If given a chance might not that 2nd string player demonstrate that they too are the better playmaker??? Not knocking Jacobs or any other starter who may be performing adequately or even well, but isn't the objective to determine the players that will give you the best chance to win and take the team and program to the next level???? Clearly Hester is the player that gives RU the best shot at doing that at strong safety...might there be other positions where the current 2nd string player also gives them the best chance to do that also?????

With the amount of nickel and dime packages, plus injuries, there is plenty of playing time available for all DBs.

No. Never seen any other "close" situations discussed here. End of thread.

Hester covers better and seems to have better reaction to the plays. Jacobs hit harder, IMHO.

It not just about playing time...RU needs it best players on the field the majority of the time There is a big difference between getting starters reps at strong safety and coming into the game in nickel and dime packages

Try logging out and logging back in - I see the user ID RUforJERSEY posting from 2 different IP's simultaneously. Who are you supposed to be?

So does this mean we can play "Guess the OP"?

This could be fun. Who would go to the effort to track down another example to make the Laviano/Rettig post again, and then pose rhetorical questions about other examples with all the subtlety of a bull in a china shop?

You are like Laviano of this forum in that you have one of the best likes/post ratio, but that may be because you are not pissing anyone off?

Hester is one of our better players. I was thinking during the game that next year our DL and DBs return but we lose all 3 starting LB's. First thing I thought was move Jacobs back to the Will next year. Just a thought.

As mentioned above, plenty of reps for all but we are now 2.5 deep at Safety when Jacobs returns. A little thin at Corner but deep at Safety.

The are a few issues with what you're saying:
1- there is no reason to assume that Hester would/could never overtake Jacobs anyway.
2- Hester was getting used to the system and is younger... So after getting some experience, of course he will continue to look better. That doesn't mean he was the best choice during summer or in game 1.
3- Hester was hurt at the beginning of the year as well. It had an effect on the number of snaps he got.

On a side note: imagine you were the better player at a particular time (laviano and Jacobs in the OPs example) and you were benched because the staff is hoping rettig or Hester develop into better players than you? Hey kid, I know you're the better player right now, but we think Hayden could be good in the future, so we're going to play him. That doesn't and should never happen in a program. You want to look your seniors in the eye after you sacrifice their season like that?

We don't lose Steve Longa but it's going to be tough to replace Gause and Lewis.

Hyster has an enormous upside

We are gojng to be painfully thin at linebacker

Here is a way to handle this next year to get our best 11 on the field

Hyster stays to saftey

Longa to the mike or the Sam

Jacobs to the will

Johnson to mike or the Sam

Gives the young lbs one more year to grow up for 2017 as we all three of those lbs are senior...

This. But we do lose DL. Both DE Mera and Lambert leave.
LB is a huge concern next year.
Lambert is a redshirt junior, he'll be back next year. Mera is a significant loss but I'm not that worried about the D-line. Linebackers is definitely a concern. Maybe Rutgers can pick up another grad transfer.

Jacobs needs to move down a level next year. He would be a very quick linebacker instead of slow safety. I don't know if it's actual speed or that he is slow to read plays and is not going full speed. But he seems very slow out there when I watched him play. Where Hester just flies around if he going to make a mistake it's going to be at full speed. I think Jacob's future should be at linebacker and I think he will make one hell of a will backer.

It's a heck of a lot to ask a player to gain 30 pounds of muscle in the off season and learn a completely new position. If he's slow to read plays at safety then having him at the Will, where he'd have to make a lot of quick decisions in reaction to the line, then I don't think it's a great transition.

Off original topic, but linebackers should be fine next year. Isaiah Johnson at mike, longa at the Sam and tj Taylor and deonte Roberts battling at will. One coach on the staff loves Roberts and thinks he will be one of their best players over the next few years. The kid from upstate ny, I'm sorry to say I can't think of his name right now, showed a lot of development since last year and has a great frame for sam backer.

Do not forget Russell, I think (has he been hurt also?) .. and maybe Margolis. Plus some true Frosh coming in.

Jacobs is too small at LB in the Big Ten ... unless he was BLAZINGLY, exceptionally, fast for a LB, which he is not.

Margolis?

Yes Margolis and I thought Taylor was playing Sam.

It's going to be interesting with Taylor. He is built more like a traditional will, and has the speed to get into coverage... But can he beat longa for the position and send him to sam or mike? The staff really thinks that deonte Roberts could grab a spot next year

Pretty sure Taylor was playing Sam.
