Last drive of the 1st half

I get it — MSU controlled a lot of the game, we managed to tie it up and then they drove right down the field on us. Getting to the half at 14-7 is the safe play. That said, when we ripped off the second run a TO there would’ve at least given us a chance.

Would’ve been very easy after the Young first down to take a timeout, look at the clock, have 2 timeouts to play with and go hurry up. Instead Greg had it in his mind that we were just running the clock out and wasn’t aware of what was happening in front of him. Complete brain lapse.

One day our sticky gloves will be stickier than their sticky gloves. How did that running back not drop the ball when Melton stripped it.

I don’t like any attempt to move the ball aggressively there. Know what you’re working with…a team that doesn’t score quickly and a QB that’s turnover prone.

We’ve been within one score or winning in 6 / 9 (now 7 / 10) games this year. We won 4 of those 6. Keep it close, and fight again in the second half.

My exact feeling.

I actually disagree with this thought entirely.

Schiano is clearly thinking “we have another half to play”

The EXCEPTION would be Rutgers marching down the field and scoring a TD. The RULE would be us getting stopped or turning the ball over and giving up another TD before half.

But suddenly this board randomly thinks we have a high powered offense that’s going to March down the field and put up 6 lmao.

I think you’re trying too hard. We were running very well against MSU in the first half and had a 9 play 96 yard drive.

Schiano was asleep at the wheel - as simple as that.

Or simply advancing into long Field goal range to if nothing else give us a shot at stealing some points....

The reality is that if we aggressively push there and we go into the half 21-7 the game is likely over.
This board then starts talking about how bad the team is and everyone cries.

I’d much rather prefer a guaranteed 7 point deficit at the half knowing I have plenty of time to win the game.

We didn’t have to aggressively push. We didn’t even have to take the Time outs….we just had to run a couple of plays with some pace and give ourselves a chance.

That drive was a total loser mentality if it was on purpose. I still think Schiano was asleep.

game is now 21-7, 4 min into the second half. "the reality is" we could have used those points before the half. Particularly on the road

Don’t know how anyone can defend or rationalize the clock management at the end of the half - we had the ball at our 30-35 yd line - 1st down and 3 TO’s with about 1:30 He let the clock run down to well under a minute and gave up on the drive after we had just ripped off a 1st down. Then we got another first down at the 50 and he started calling TOs when there were only a few seconds left

Do you trust our defense more or our offense?

I just think it’s a difference of philosophy.
At what point in schianos career has he ever called a timeout on his end of the field like that to chase points?

I don’t think ever

That's fine - to start the drive.
But not really that either.

3 MSU timeouts means at a minimum need a 1st down to actually run out the clock.

Once MSU burned 2 TOs and we were moving the ball - change strategy and try to get in FG range at least.
Announcers even said - keep running it if you want.
But run it quickly.

Worst case: was HC Schiano really worried about MSU going 80ish yards in less than a min with 0 timeouts after a Korsac pint?

not in a game where we gave up nearly 300 yards of offense in the first half no. it was a miracle it was a 1 poss game at halftime tbh. We had the opportunity to steal some points there in a game we are underdogs in on the road... it was foolish coaching

that's not chasing points in that scenario though, it's essentially a 2 minute drill, particularly with 3 timeouts remaining. High School teams prepare for 2 minute drills. I'm one of the most critical of schiano and even I'm surprised he could do something like that

We basically had no clock management from 2:05 down to 17 seconds, then we start calling timeouts and try make something of it. WTF?

We have trouble scoring so your solution is to give up a possession? With the ball on our 25 with 1:35 left and all our time outs, and MSU with only one time out. Absurd. You don’t give away possessions, which are precious to teams that have trouble scoring. It was dumb. And then it ends with RU still taking all its time outs then taking a knee. Ugh. And we lost by one score.

Idk how anyone can defend that. It was absolutely brutal to watch and I was in silence on my couch trying to explain it to my family.

I don't think anyone has mentioned that we were getting the ball to start the second half. Maybe that factored into Schiano's thinking about how to handle the end of the first half (although I'm not saying Schiano was right; I think I would have started using timeouts when we got to our own 25 and were out of the shadow of our goal posts .) Unfortunately, we had only one first down on that first drive of the second half.

Irrelevant that we were to get the second half kickoff. Plenty of time to try to get points. And the TO with one second left takes the embarrassment cake.

I totally get teh idea of running out the 2 minutes to end the half and get the ball first in the 2nd half. Don't agree.. but understand. We'd need clean crisp passing.. and our QB has a little INT bug... and trying hard to avoid INTs actually seems to make him play worse.

But GS should have used MSU's called timeout after 1st down gain of 2 yards for us to re-evaluate his plan. GS should have gotten angry that MSU was so greedy as to try to get the ball back after just scoring a TD. As soon as we made that first 3rd down play for a 1st Down.. GS should have shifted to a 2-minute offense. I think we actually earned a 1st down that refs called SHORT by a yard and that threw GS off later. He expected a clock stoppage to move chains. If they gave us the 1st we earned.. I think GS would have shifted to trying to score.

Yeah.. there were some lame calls against us.. and no-calls favoring MSU. It gets hard to watch seeing us struggle with refs clearly favoring MSU. But I was so happy with that last score. No way MSU should have tried that long FG against a team that blocks kicks while already up 2 scores. That was greedy and stunk of point-spread covering... going to 13 from 10 when 10 did not quite cover. Some refs calling those holds on our last drive so quickly seem to have bet that way also... or tried to do favors for bettors.

I don't think anyone has mentioned that we were getting the ball to start the second half. . . .
Because it doesn’t matter. No matter how you try to slice it, RU was trailing, having trouble scoring, and just handed away a possession. RU had the chance to get two possessions in a row, one ending the first half and the other starting the second half. That’s a good thing for a team losing and having trouble scoring. But it just gave one of the possessions away. And lost by one score. Bad time management. Bad game theory. Bad tactics. Just bad.
