Let Paramus Catholic let them know what you think of their commencement speaker

That should endear Rutgers to the school. Let him give his talk and be adults about it. There are going to be a few hundred kids graduating from school that day that have nothing to do with football...don't be pricks and make their graduation an unpleasant experience.

For once, Politi finds himself on the right side of an argument:

Do RU a favor and give PC President, James Vail a piece of your mind. I sure did.

jvail@paramus-catholic.org
Well done. PC is giving a major competitor of the State University of New Jersey an avenue to recruit New Jersey kids. Without a doubt, this is an unfair advantage to a Rutgers competitor (out of state) and PC seems to think it okay to alienate the State University. Anyone who disagrees with this should contact the PC President. If you don't have an issue with it, do nothing.

Listen, I'm not a fan of PC allowing this to happen, however, let's keep our mouths shut on this one. No need to look like a bunch of crybabies because Harbaugh knows what he's doing on the recruiting trail.
You can show your displeasure and be respectful. I would recommend approaching it that way. I am sick of state residents treating this state like crap. This would not happen in any other state.

We all know what this is really about, but Harbaugh is a pretty accomplished individual and maybe has something of value to say (as much as any graduation speaker can say something of value). Obviously he isn't there if PC isn't a pipeline to Michigan, but we have to stop treating college football like it is a war. Harbaugh repays a school that has been good to him, and their graduating class gets a pretty high profile graduation speaker. Just leave it alone...complaining about it is a pointless battle that will only make you look petty.

Not from people on this board. The Harbaugh haters are going overboard on this one.

Do you think Coach Ash would ever be invited as a commencement speaker at a school in Michigan. I'm sick and tired of these by school in NJ.

Yes, if he had Harbaugh's success. Remember, Michigan has plenty of fans of MSU, even tOSU and ND.

Rare is the state that is a monolith in fandom.

The better question is, would our fans complain if Ash was invited? And I'm pretty sure Rescigno is from MI, I don't know about anyone else.

This has nothing to do with state pride and everything to do with everyone likes a winner. When we won, Schiano was sought after. He fought the NCAA like Harbaugh on camps in FL. Our fans didn't whine then. We need to show on the field that the 4 previous years were an abberration.

Maybe Jimmy can explain to the PC crowd at commencement how he can reconcile his claim to be honorable with his breaking the scholarship commitment to a couple of key long-time recruits just days before the letter of intent signing day, leaving them high and dry. I'd pay to listen to that.

For anyone saying Rutgers fans shouldn't care about this, what do you suppose the reaction of Michigan fans would be if Urban Meyer was asked to give the commencement speech at whatever Michigan H.S. is known for producing the top football players in the state of Michigan? And what kind of criticism would the leaders of said school receive? Michigan fans would be absolutely livid and the criticism would be blistering.

I agree going to the event to protest not only serves no purpose but makes us look bad. And I'm sure Politi's article as well as e-mails from angry Rutgers fans will fall on deaf ears.

But no matter how you slice it, this is a huge slap in the face to every person who lives in New Jersey and a big fat "FU" to the State University of New Jersey. The Paramus Catholic administration should be ashamed of themselves.

Please don't tell me RU is giving any scholarships to PC students this year. Any way to find out how many PC students will be enrolling in RU this fall vs Michigan?

Grow up. Rutgers fans should give a rats ass that he is speaking at any HS in America. When Ash starts winning this will be foolish

Let him speak as long as he tells the truth about how he feels about how the Michigan football players receiving academic help is lacking and the job opportunities as ex Wolverines leaves something to be desired , like he once did :
>“Michigan is a good school and I got a good education there,” he said, “but the athletic department has ways to get borderline guys in and, when they’re in, they steer them to courses in sports communications. They’re adulated when they’re playing, but when they get out, the people who adulated them won’t hire them.”<

PC Student: So I'm thinking of playing for Michigan

*Angry RU fans interrupt graduation and scream and cry like babies*

PC Student: Oh no actually let me go to Rutgers, I'm so convinced now

People can do whatever the heck they want, but unless you are a parent of a student that goes to that school, this would be considered creepy and petty to contact a High School that you have nothing to do with.

Why because they saved money by him wavering his fee and maybe making a "small" donation.
BTW let him speak the guy is weird to hear speak sometimes
And who here can even remember you graduation speaker?

They would send Harbaugh to speak at a school in Ohio. Both schools recruit the other's territory, heavily. Harbaugh is actually from Ohio.

Leaving the state to play college football isn't limited to NJ.

Again, if Ash were to speak at an OOS high school, would it be a problem?

Ask the fans of the out of state program that Ash comes in their territory to speak at one of their High Schools if they like him doing that or not.
I bet you will find some of those fans upset because an in state HS is helping Rutgers recruiting efforts instead of backing State U's recruiting efforts 100% for that HS's football talent.
So ask your question on other school's boards and I bet some Michigan FB fans wouldn't like it if Ash came in their state and gave a commencement speech at one of their High Schools which would help Rutgers recruiting in Michigan and the school he was giving that speech.

Unless you think Harbaugh is making the speech out of the goodness of his heart without an ulterior motive , don't act so high and mighty when disagreeing with the Rutgers fans that don't like the idea of the Michigan Football Head Coach giving a commencement speech at a NJ HS.

There is a difference between liking something and carrying on about it. Do I like it? No.

Do I think it's a big deal- No. Either Ash is going to win and no one will care who speaks or he won't and this behavior will continue.

But writing emails will not get big time recruits to come here.

And no Michigan fans would not care, they have one of the best known programs in CFB and do not have the thin skin some of our fans do.

Please don't tell me RU is giving any scholarships to PC students this year. Any way to find out how many PC students will be enrolling in RU this fall vs Michigan?
So punish the PC kids who actually want to go to Rutgers?

- let the disgruntlement come from Paramus Catholic folks who are not exactly jazzed by having their kid's high school graduation turned into a publicity/recruiting opportunity by this unctuous, smarmy self-promoter. Let Politi pursue this.

Rutgers fans should stay as far away from this as possible - do not get played ... do not get sucked into a set-up ...

... because crafty Harbaugh will undoubtedly pivot & alter his focus - he is not going to deliver a football pep talk -
it is entirely possible (and pretty much a certainty) that Harbaugh will go all glorious 'high-road" and deliver some inspirational address that deliberately excludes virtually all references to football (other than to say that he is not here to talk about Paramus Catholic's incredibly fantastically talented High-character football players - no, he is here to talk about values & meaning)
- he likely will expound upon life, family and faith & go on & on about his numerous Catholic mission trips to Peru and how it is important to reach out to the less fortunate - regardless of who or where you may be in life - Here is something that he said in an article about one of his trips :

Harbaugh, who sponsors a family through Santisimo Sacramento, said he plans to continue the service trips because they give him “the feeling of going down the right path.” ..... “The doors that God will open for you by the people you meet or by the circumstances you’re in (allow) your character to be shaped and your spirit to grow,” he said. “Those kinds of doors are opened for (me) here.”

- so you can see that he can flip the switch and go all pious & humble & deliver a 'life lessons' commencement address that most observers would consider noble, inspirational & agenda-free... but of course his very presence is the agenda.

Any really extra-strong heavy handed slams of Harbaugh by RU fans for this will be greeted with over-the-top shrill wailing of faux righteous indignation by Harbaugh and a some weaselly sanctimonious behind-the-scenes manipulation to galvanize his connections with the NJ Parochial Football Schools & Harbaugh would actively try to brew resentment toward RU among this group.

I have to say I'm surprised at how many Rutgers fans don't seem to care that one of New Jersey's top football programs is being turned into the University of Michigan's minor league team.

Apparently I was wrong to be upset and concerned about this. I stand corrected.

A bit of an Over sell IMARUFAN! the point here is that words will not change anything here but 8th of Oct ~11:30 could outweigh all the words and bitch'in; with a win!
And that is the true battle field not some HS graduation.

As long as it could not be heard from the ground,is there any reason why Rutgers could not hire a plane to fly over the school with a banner that says "Rutgers---New Jersey's Team"

Yeah, I was obviously being facetious.

I'll freely admit my sensitivity on this subject is probably not helped by the fact that my sister is a Michigan alum, lives in Michigan and last years game was a total embarrassment ... ugh.

But I will agree wholeheartedly with you that words will not change a thing. And that beating the Wolverines on Oct 8th would be an infinitely greater recruiting tool than any commencement speech. (As if I needed even more reason to want Rutgers to beat Michigan!!!)

Wonder if Michigan fans would get upset if OSU's Meyer gave a commencement speech at a Michigan HS that he's been getting talent from.
Rutgers fans might be called thinned skinned, but with the way other schools have mined HS talent over the years compared to how RU FB fared , how can anyone blame them.

I'm sure Wolverine fan would give a big [thumb2] to Urban for doing a speech at a Michigan HS that happened to send him a few good recruits in the past.
Don't tell me there's no comparison, it's recruiting in state talent and watching a competitor gain an edge getting recruits.

Nothing can be done and letters probably will be a waste of effort, but all RU fans should dislike seeing another B1G school gain an edge recruiting the NJ HS Talent that Rutgers would like to get.

Hold the phone now. This could end up backfiring. Has anyone ever heard Harbaugh speak or talk publicly at all? He's the weirdest, most awkward man I've ever listened to. Maybe the kids at PC will be like what the heck and if that's what they remember about Michigan football, then great!

We're making this into a bigger deal than it actually is. He'll come, speak and leave. Who cares? Was hoping Partrdige would just disappear into Michigan but the guy is proving to be a force. Wonder of Ash would ever consider bringing him back.

New Rochelle became a feeder for us, should Ash not be allowed to speak there?

If new Rochelle was one of the best teams in the country over the last few years, then yes .. Ash would probably feel the heat too.

I'm happy to see our fans all fired up. It's a sign that the number of people unwilling to accept this kind of stuff is growing - and that will ultimately help recruiting. There was a time when these same current ru fans would have gladly attended the big name coach delivering a speech .

Michigan may win the B10 conference this year and next. I also believe they have a legit shot at a National Championship during the next three years. One thing is for sure they will be very competitive. If Coach Ash doesn't get big results from this program in three years he's gone. He will not sacrifice his career while other coaches reach the pinnacle of their careers.
