I guess I'm beating a dead horse with this, but as a former newspaper reporter, editor and publisher, I am keenly sensitive to the SL's penchant for muckraking when it comes to RU.

So now that the entire Rider cross-country team has been suspended for "hazing" involving a planned nude run around the college's track, let's see how the SL reports the story (if at all) compared to what would have happened if this had been the RU cross-country team.

They won't. They will write a few articles that nobody will read and then let it go. As a former editor and publisher did you handle all stories the same? Would a house fire in Irvington get the same coverage as a house fire at Bruce Springsteen's mansion? Of course not, I hate the SL as much as anyone but it's silly to think RU isn't going to be covered with more scrutiny than some small time track program.

You can ask high school (private and public) guidance counselors and teacher who rep their alma matters and just love to bash Rutgers!

is bruce ok?

ESPN is covering it because it's a significant story in the world of sports.

The SL will pay only minimal attention to it because Rider doesn't "waste NJ taxpayer money on athletics".

I think a main difference is that RU is the public school and Rider is private.
They think they are protecting the taxpayers when they go after public education.

Well if they can tie Rutgers into the story in some way, then they will report it.

and the fact that they reported it yesterday supports my tinfoil hat point....

I'm sure the Star Liar put out such a hard hitting article showing how Rider's T & F program is such a rogue program and needs fire everyone involved, dismiss the streakers on the team and disband the program
Rider's AD is probably wishing that incident was covered by the Liar as fairly as the S/L covers RU athletics and everyone involved with RU sports .

But not on the sport pages. Only on the local Mercer County news.
[roll]
That doesn't matter to those who try to make the Star Liar into a nice rag that does fair and balanced reporting when it comes to RU and would never act biased in their coverage.

If that page starts getting a lot of hits, they'll bump it up. But people simply don't care as much about Rider as they do Rutgers. Everything will always be magnified there. That's not a vendetta, that's the way news works.

It should have been in the sports page, but the Star Liar knew it couldn't run far with it so buried it

I feel the Star Ledger covers RU about the same as the way Pravda covered the USA during the time Russia was known as the USSR and had some people think it was not spinning the facts and reporting only the truth.

Its sad what our culture has become with regard to innocent rights of passage like this. The security guard is probably afraid for their job if they do not report this and the University is afraid of negative PR so they have to look like they are coming down hard on these kids to teach them a lesson. The problem is that something like this or making freshman carry gear gets lumped into the same boat with mean spirited and dangerous hazing like pledges or freshmen being forced to eat feces or over drink alcohol or forced sexual acts. We have no ability today to draw a line between what is criminal and dangerous and what is a rite of passage team bonding experience.

Wait, you guys think a minor sport at a small school should get the same billing as the sport that drives the bus as the flagship state university?
No but should be in the sports section , because it's about a college sports program.
Too often the S/L gets a pass for not covering something like it does RU, because some people don't look at how the Ledger has been covering RU FB since the stadium expansion days.
Also the S/L doesn't make what happened at other programs look as bad as they would if it happened at RU.
But I'm sure others will deny that happens and claim the Star Ledger is unbiased and covers RU fairly.
I'll just disagree with that POV, before it is even posted.

Hazing, etc., on campus is part of a much larger storyline that extends well beyond sports or the sports pages.

Erm,I think that you misspelled SCREWTINY when referring to that paper and it's RU coverage.

Of course the Ledger has been unfair toward Rutgers and stressed negatives almost to the point of hyperbole, but to compare a private school track team to a Big Ten football coach, or to compare nude running to home invasions is absolutely absurd.

Can we be critical of the Ledger without doing this every time something happens somewhere? This is more tiresome than their coverage.

Doesn't belong in the sports section, in my opinion.

They've never covered the team.

"Major nude hazing scandal a mere 25 miles from Rutgers!"

Never covered any of the Rider sports, at anytime, in the sports section ? Right !!!!
Sports program's hazing incident is not qualified top be put in the sports section? Good point but a bunch of [poop]
I stand by this statement : "should be in the sports section , because it's about a college sports program."
Also this one: "But I'm sure others will deny that happens and claim the Star Ledger is unbiased and covers RU fairly."
So:" I'll just disagree with that POV, before it is even posted." and after the excuses absolving the Star Ledger of biased reporting when it comes to covering RU are posted.

Speaking of such things, the latest on Myles Hartfield....Its all good by nj.com..........unless he ever decides to come to RU...which will never happen.

Interestingly he still seems to have lettered his senior yr at Sayerville....hmmm

"He started as a freshman for us and was a four-year letter guy. He has all the tools and has great instincts. He's the full package and he's certainly a Division 1 college football player."

Oh great....another I hate SL thread....so original. This one is so much better than the last 5000. [eyeroll]

Wait, when did Kevin Bannon go back to Rider?
Speaking of sports related nudity:

He recruited decent talent but somehow rarely managed to find players who could consistently make free throws. So one afternoon, fed up with their adventures at the line, he plastered the gym’s windows with brown, opaque paper. He asked the team’s female manager to leave the gym. He wanted no outsiders, no witnesses. The players gathered around him, and he announced what he had planned. One by one, they would step to the line. They would shoot. If they made their shot, they would step away and wait for their next shot. If they missed, they would remove a piece of clothing. Shoes came off. So did socks, then jerseys. Some players bricked their way down to their jockstraps. He had tried repetition. He had punished them with sprints. He had worked to correct their form. Maybe this — shame — would finally work. It didn’t. Nothing worked.

This was from a Grantland article about the early coaching years of Gregg Popovich, who some consider to be one of the greatest coaches in any sport. Maybe that's where Bannon got the idea.
