Maybe the decommits are happening because:

Ash and Co are doing things right. I am asking if it is possible that this staff is simply being honest with these recruits. They may be letting these recruits know what is expected of them as a student athlete at Rutgers and what the staff and school can do for them vis a vis an education and a football career. Lay it on the line and let the kid make a decision. No lies, promises, or bribes. Take it or leave it. If this is true I have all the respect in the world for this staff. I obviously do not know for sure what goes on but it seems reasonable to me it could be happening this way.

One player specifically mentioned that Ash said that new players are going to have to prove themselves on special teams first before Cracking the lineup of offense and defense.

The guy doesn't bullshit at all, and I'm not sure how Saban and Urban operate, but not bullshitting seems to be a cornerstone.

All head coaches give the same spiel regarding what is expected of a student athlete. The large number of decommits were primarily caused by the poor team performance, the off field scandals and the dismissal of all the prior assistant coaches/recruiting staff.

For a certain portion of the recruits, if Ash & the entire staff is saying "We are going to dramatically improve this program day by day, year by year" then - these certain recruits are going to get uncomfortable - they are going to say - "OH ... I could work my way into playing for last year's Rutgers team ... but if these guys aggressively build a the caliber of team that they are talking about - I'm going to be watching from the sidelines"

The OP is spot-on (along with the fact that, well, guys leave during regime changes...) and this is why most of us aren't getting worried over THIS class.

I just responded with my above stated opinion on your post. This staff has a goal and they only want kids who will buy in from the start

I'm not concerned about what players opted out after Ash and Co. being on the job for 2 months. The players will come once these guys have a full cycle under their belt, and some already are on the way. Oden is a huge feather in the cap at the most critical position.

The most important thing is we have winning coaches from big time programs who understand what it takes to win and have been around winners. Everything else will fall in line.

We finally have the right guys after the last regime. Let them do their thing.

Zeke Elliot said this was his favorite play from his time at tOSU, it was on special teams

This is it in a nutshell! I do not understand how people cannot understand. You take one of the aforementioned issues and you would likely get decommits. You take all of them and you will have what we see now.
Many of these kids were going to decommit on Flood and the previous staff.

They may all give the same spiel but only a few can extract it out of the players and make them want to run thru a wall for you.

Flood kisses recruit's butt. Even more so as things get bad for him.

Ash comes in with straight talk and no butt kissing.

And there is surprise that some young kids may react to that with fear and their always praised sensibilities offended?

Anyone with sense knew it would be a shakeout period. When what is left emerges (and don't forget this spring we will see some go), hopefully there will be a strong unit forged through wanting to be here.

We need to sell these players using Donald Trump's sales tactics:

1) Make Rutgers Great Again
2) We are going to be winning so much that it will make your head spin
3) Only you can make it happen by coming over to the Banks of the Old Raritan.

If this pitch helps a person become the next POSTUS, then why can't it work for RU's head coach in recruiting.

Yup. Foxhole kinda guys. You want them next to you when sh*t gets thick.

Very well said, it's clear that Ash's approach to recruiting is very different from Flood's.

What happens when half the team can't prove themselves on special teams? He will have to play with what he has, this isn't OSU or Bama, resources are limited and he will likely play UNPROVEN players given the roster.

File this under To Be Expected. How many decommits are offensive players who know they won't likely fit in to a different offense?

He's building a program, not trying to pull off a miracle season against a very difficult schedule, watch and enjoy while the program grows.

Except the media wouldn't buy that crap from a Rutgers coach. Where Trump is concerned they are more than happy to help him dismantle the GOP. You want to see how a Rutgers coach would get treated.. wait for the general if Trump is the nominee.

He needs players to build a program, low numbers in classes can come back to bite you. He may have to take lesser players just to have healthy bodies.

We'll have 85 on scholarship this year. Another 20 preferred walk-ons. That's 105 to start camp with prior to the 1st day of school when we hold tryouts for additional walk-ons. Not sure what you're worried about right now.

I GOT IT!! It's the weather. I blame the decommits on the weather. Despite the warmer-than-normal temps, it's winter and a bit chilly. As a result Ash and his staff wear long sleeves and the recruits can't see their hairy arms. Hence they think they're being recruited by losers rather than winners.
