Not as close as the score looks folks. Outshot 16 to 1. Possession time was not even close

It was hard to tell how good they really were. We made no attempt to connect or keep the ball. We were clearing the ball back to them and then they would attack, over and over.

fyi:

Lost to Hostra 2-1 to open, then beat Bucknell 1-0 and UC-Riverside 4-1, so they're now 3-1 on the early season. They beat UConn 2-1, in an exhibition, but that really doesn't mean much. Big game for them is tomorrow night vs #23 'Ville @ home.

Regardless, sounds like a bad night, let's hope that was the "get it out of the way" game.

There will be many "get it out of the way games" if we don't start trying to play soccer.
You cannot compartmentalize soccer, if you continually give away the ball, you will always be defending
Offense and possession work to improve your defense simply because you have to do it less
Tactical defensive shape is also affected as you continually "clear" the ball out. The ball essentially dictates positioning as you chase it. With possession you can dictate your own positioning.
My observations:
Outside backs get up the field too quickly leaving the inside backs or keeper with few options. They need to create width first in order to be an option.
Restarts and goal kicks need to be quicker, too many times we end up relying on a long ball off a restart.
A consistent attempt to play to "feet" and through the middle should be made
The realization that ball possession is the best way to keep the other team off the scoreboard
