Michigan blog on the new kids in the conference

not a bad article. He doesn't really talk bad about RU. Just discusses how many of the teams switching conferences did worse their 2nd season. He looks at our QB replacement for Nova. He also looks at our tough schedule. The schedule more than anything is why he thinks we slump.

Road - Michigan, PSU, Wisconsin
Home - Ohio St, Mich St, Nebraska

Those will be 6 tough games to win.

Then you have:
Road - Indiana, Army
Home - Maryland, Wash St, Kansas, Norfolk St

"I had contacted Scarlet Knights beat writer Dan Duggan to obtain the full scoop; here's what he had to say regarding the quarterback battle of Chris Laviano and Hayden Rettig:":chairshot:

Actually, Danno gave a fair answer.

Nobody ever accused me of cherry picking quotes.

That's good Knight... give a little taste of what's in the article to peak our interest but don't give away the farm so we're forced to click to satisfy our curiosity.

I like your style.

Rutgers and Maryland are facing some of the same issues like QB and OL but where I believe RU separates itself from the Terps is (1) a stable of good RB's, (2) a wealth of experience in the Front 7 (Mera, Hamilton, Gause, and Longa along with a rising star in Turay), and (3) experience and depth at WR led by Carroo.

Looking at the schedules I think it's a wash. Rutgers has a more daunting task in 1 B1G game (Nebraska v Iowa) but Maryland has the toughest OOC opponent traveling to WVU.

Gary Nova was inconsistent and TO prone but find it ironic that a Michigan blogger saying that. He was none of that against them. So I guess it true. My friend Dawson who is a diehard Minny fan said that if you beat Michigan, they act like it never happened. They only acknowledge OSU loses. Well that's a lot of acknowledgement.

It'll be a little nice getting Nebraska and Wisconsin out of the way in the future and getting to play some of the other West teams. Haha.

had no Idea we play Iowa, Illinois, and Minny all in 16. Gotta win at least 2/3 and no more gauntlet of 4 straight like last year

Nova, no matter how many picks he threw, did not have a back up at Rutgers. That is all you need to know about our 2015 quarterback situation.

Oh, throw in Fridge, who carried the kid, is no longer here.

If RU can get to a bowl game this year, anyway anyhow then it has to be considered a very successful first two years against as hard as a schedule we may ever have (conference wise).

After this year we get a few breaks on the following:
  1. B1G conf schedule,
  2. Recruitment should have picked up (full class of players coming in to play in the B1G),
  3. Flood and co. would have had more time to mold themselves into a B1G type team
  4. More familiar with the opponents scouting reports, etc. The fact that we have been in 3 conferences in 3 years is a big deal for the coaching staff to prepare, coordinating travel, etc.
  5. And hopefully we'll have an OC that sticks around for a few years!

Let's do this!

I know everyone(media) is stating the OL is an issue but I really think we will be okay in this area. Bujari got absolutely no push up the middle last year, he was constantly battling injuries. Hoping Nelson continues his impressive spring gains. Consistency is all he needs, he has shown flashes before.
Denman will be an upgrade over Alexander. He was serviceable but nothing special. The only issue is with Johnson who was very good. Hopefully Miller steps in, we have heard good things about him. OL will be without much experience but guys who have been in the program a few years. Not like years past when defensive guys had to be moved to the OL out of desperation.

From what I understand it takes a long time for an OL to jell. RU didn't have the luxury of concentrating on it full time during Spring practice because of injuries. They'll have to identify who plays where and do a lot of work next month to be ready.

I think this could be our best O line since 2006 ! Dorian Miller will open some eyes, and Lumpkin & Mueller will make All Conference teams. Get Nelson steady at Center during August, Denman should be solid at RT,and voila ! Magic happens ! lol.

We knew before last year that our conference schedule would be the toughest possible. The B1G brass wanted to expose the conferences highest profile programs to the NY media market, so that is the cross we've borne.

But I thought the article was pretty much on target and seemed more positive toward RU than UMd. I was interested, however, in seeing the chart of sophomore slump performances by those P5 schools who changed conferences before us. WVU, TCU, and Syracuse had the biggest drop-offs. Hopefully, RU will follow the Mizzou path instead of those others.

I think both of you make some great points. I like to add that most of them have been in the system for at least 3 years with the exception being Cole. That is a major plus for an OL and will probably shorten the time it takes to play as one unit. Also, these guys aren't completely void of game experience. A few games go a long way into helping players develop. It validates what they experienced in practice. Too often people forget football is like 90% practice and 10% games. You are likely to have a good idea (range) of how players will perform before they step onto the field.

I do think Nelson took some shots this past spring when Flood didn't name him the starter. The fans and media started to think Nelson wasn't good enough. I think Flood wants to push players so the don't become lazy just because the job is their's. If anyone has a chance go look at the Ohio State game and you'll see Nelson has what it takes to play center at this level. Nelson was just stuck behind Bujari. Btw, the injuries this spring was unusual, but most of the OL can lean on their experience together from the past few years as teammates.

Do you really think that he is basing his analysis solely on the Michigan game???

He is 100% correct in his description of Nova.

Meechigan is going to be a tough one. They got that Iowa transfer.. 5th year QB with 25 starts at Iowa. Harbaugh will have a solid QB. I just hope we don't take a step back... I'd be happy to win one of ttfp or meechigan. And stop the blow-out losses. be more competitive.. win/loss is not the main issue for the long haul. If we get to look competitive in every game, that will help a lot. The blow-out losses is what is most dangerous in the big picture.

Jack Rudock was brought in because Harbaugh is not happy with the current crop of QB, but is Rudock the difference for UM this year? Iowa doesn't have the greatest QB in the world, but Rudock left because he was about to lose his job. He's a game manager and nothing more. Don't expect him to come in and win games with his arm. He was one of those guys who could give you a strong game today and tomorrow he's a clustf*ck. Even when he had a strong game he wasn't the deciding factor in the outcome. Right now UM will field 9 QB when camp opens next month. What does that tell you?
