Considering the week we just came off of, if I were Flood I would have started Rettig in the second half and potentially let him go the rest of the way as well. By all accounts Rettig and Laviano were close to equal throughout camp, and Rettig's trajectory seemed to indicate he would soon be passing Laviano bye, if he hadn't already. Rettig did everything you could ask for in the first half, and he did it while the game was still tight and without Carroo. A minor offense or not, Laviano went and got himself suspended for doing something stupid at possibly the worst time he could have picked. That might be ok for you or me, but not for the potential starting QB of a B1G team when the coach is going through the final decision making process on who the starter is. This would have been a good chance for Flood to make a statement to the team that how you conduct yourself matters. No way I would have started Laviano in the second half.
