Without reading any other posts, or listening to the post game press conference by Pikiell ...

Ugh. I am a genuine optimist ... but it is really tough holding on to that sentiment at this moment. That was a really disappointing game, very poorly played by RU. There is really no other way to frame it.

Some General Comments:

1) Before the season started, to me, at least, it was obvious that RU COULD be an NCAA team under certain conditions:

a) Harper and Bailey both played as 1st or 2nd Team All Big Ten players over the course of the season. I think GENERALLY that is occurring. Bailey's shooting has been inconsistent, true, and Harper's stats have taken a bit of a hit with 2 games played after the flu and not being fully recovered, but generally, this has been happening. So ... SUCCESS.
b) A 3rd scorer emerged - though in my opinion it did NOT have to be the same player every game. RU has had 7 games in which they have NOT had a player other than Harper and Bailey score in double figures. No player other than Harper or Bailey has scored in double digits more than 4 times in 16 games!!!! So, while I thought it did not have to be the same player every game, that is ridiculous ... and again, in SEVEN (7) of 16 games NO player other than Bailey or Harper has been in double digits. The tally? Here are the number of times a player has scored in double digits this season (not including Harper or Bailey): 4 Times - Williams, Sommerville; 2 Times - Derkack, Hayes, Acuff and Ogbole; 1 Time: Martini, Davis. So ... FAIL.
c) Williams provided off-court AND ON-COURT leadership (by performance - and I figured he'd be the most likely 3rd scorer more often than not, averaging 10-11 ppg). Yes, he is physically tough ... but he has not been as solid defensively as last season, has forced the ball way too much offensively and has almost as many turnovers as assists (31 assists to 27 turnovers), and has only averaged 7 ppg in 24 mpg ... so FAIL
c) Ogbole/Sommerville would be able to be an effective combo for 35+ mpg, together averaging perhaps 12 ppg and 10 rpg ... and be at least average defensively. So ... they are averaging 11 ppg, 8 rpg ... short of the MINIMUM needed, frankly ... and between them are NOT at least average defensively ... so a FAIL
d) TWO of the transfers (between Martini, Acuff, Derkack and Hayes) would be productive contributors - and not necessarily the same 2 every game, but TWO PER GAME. In SOME fairness, Acuff is still working his way from a foot injury - but he has been much better the last 2-3 games. Derkack has energy and moments - but WAY too many awful games. Martini ... uh ... total miss and fail. Hayes ... uh ... his defense has been REALLY, REALLY bad, making it tough for him to find minutes ... and now he is 1-12 from 3 his last 4 games, shooting just 33% on the year, and has only made as many as 2 3-point shots in a game a total of 4 times in 16 games, and has made ZERO 3-point shots 7 times ... against Wagner, St. Pete, Monmouth, Merrimack and Kennesaw St he looked like a 8-10 ppg scorer ... since then in 11 games he has a total of 5-25 3-pointers and a total of 17 points. Uh ... FAIL.
e) Ogbole and Davis would show some development, and along with Williams provide a FLOOR and a BASE for team defense.
2) Only Point "A" from above is occurring, generally.

3) I also thought it clear from the roster construction, even before the season began, that against any reasonable team (P5 or possibly even a mid-major - not low major team), if NEITHER Bailey NOR Harper played well, RU would likely lose ... but there would ALSO be games in which BOTH played very well, and RU would win - even if not favored. This remains true.

4) What is now obvious, is that because the supplementary players are generally ineffective MOST games, RU needs Bailey and Harper to BOTH play at All-Big Ten levels in any game they wish to win ... So, going forward, in the remaining Big Ten schedule, if only 1 plays at a high level in that game, RU will likely lose that game.

I am not going to comment on the TEAM aspects of this particular game, except to say that Harper is clearly not fully recovered (though a bit better than versus Wisconsin), Bailey did not have a great game - though he only forced 3 shots I saw, and was a very willing passer in this game (got lost on defense several times), and there was very little the overall team did well - except hold their own on rebounds for the most part. I will say one of the most shocking stats of the game is that RU allowed Purdue to shoot 24-32 from 2-point range ... that is RIDICULOUS ... Partly because Braden Smith is THAT good, and I have not seen a team run the 2-man screen and roll better than Purdue, ... not in years ... Purdue has been doing that ALL SEASON and no one has come up with a solution to that (maybe Auburn).

Individual Players:

1) Bailey: Was good shooting 3's, good rebounding (not great but good), hit 3-4 FT - but a really costly miss of a front end of a 1 and 1 at a crucial time ... had a couple of steals and a block - but also got lost a few times on defense allowing easy baskets.

2) Harper: A bit better than vs Wisconsin (he couldn't even move against Wisconsin), but though he played 28 minutes, he clearly was not 100% from a conditioning, strength and stamina standpoint - and to have a 3-point shot BLOCKED by the 6'0" tall Smith? No lift, obviously.

3) Who goes 3 ... Acuff? Okay, Acuff: Earned his minutes, even though he forced a couple of shots. He IS playing solid enough (not great, but okay enough) defense to stay on the floor for his offense. Plus 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 0 turnovers. Looks like he now has the best chance the rest of the season of being RU's 3rd scorer.

4) Sommerville (since he started): Um ... again forced at least 1 shot, tried to body up, but on several plays got tossed around like a rag doll by Kaufman-Renn. Just 2 points and 3 rebounds in 21 minutes. Could defend the pick and roll at all - but truthfully, no RU player was able to do that this game.

5) Williams - did little good except hustle, and then got hurt (after he was body slammed on a moving pick with no call)

6) Ogbole: Meh ... some solid rebounding (5, with 3 offensive), a couple of decent offensive moves, but hsi defense was ... average at best, versus Kaufman-Renn.

7) Derkack - awful. He finally TOOK, and made a pull-up 12' jump shot off a dribble penetration ... but then proceeded to drive to the rim EVERY OTHER TIME, missing every time ... 1-7 FG. Did little else - was at best okay on defense.

8) Davis: An empty game this game - he WAS the best rU player on=e on one versus Smith, but was poor on offense with 3 poor turnovers, and only took (and made) 1 FG. But if he is not going to assist and create shots for himself and others, and IS going to turn the ball over, his minutes had to be limited - and they were, this game.

9) Grant: Yes ... a fine game ... high energy, rebounds, 3-3 FG, including 1-1 from 3 ... MORE TIME .. and appropriately a DNP for Martini.

10) Hayes - another 0-3 from 3, and not great defense. As pointed out above: 5-25 from 3 his last 11 games, 17 total points, now 33% 3-point FG on the year.

Right now, the staff has not committed to allowing the best 6 to 7 players to play on the court, so they can get cohesion and used to how the others will anticipate plays happening.

The starting backcourt I envisioned after the portal additions and subtractions was.

Dylan Harper
Tyson Acuff
Ace Bailey
Dylan Grant
Lathan Sommerville

1st guard off the bench, JWill
2nd guard off the bench, Derkack
3rd guard off the bench, JMike
1st forward off the bench, Bryce Dortch
2nd forward off the bench, Martini
1st big man off bench-Ogbole
Hybrid forward/guard in specific situations PJ Hayes.

There are limited options to play well, because the guards are not good shooters or playmakers outside of Harper and Acuff.....JWill passes up more open shots than Mulcahy did, which is hard to do.

In terms of Derkack, he is the one player who should actually shoot open corner 3s....he keeps turning those shots down and driving into baseline, looking for foul calls and the refs have adjusted and refuse to call the fouls when Derkack is driving. It's almost as if the refs have been asked to swallow the whistle.....he is most negatively impacted by his inability to hit perimeter shots, so the drives are less frequent and don't appear to be bail out calls to send him to the line.

Ironically, the only path to success this year, is to burn Dortchs redshirt and commit to finding another wing defender and length guy, that can help on screen and rolls....it is a LOT to ask Bryce Dortch to climb over screens and alter a shot attempt of a Braden Smith, or John Blackwell (Wisconsin), John Tonje (Wisconsin).....we just started playing Grant and there should be TWO options to defend from the wing and paint, to help Dylan and Ace.

if you split 40 minutes of time between Dortch and Grant, I feel fairly certain we can find 12 to 13PPG and 8 rebounds between those two freshman.

16 PPG Bailey (14 shots)
16 PPG Harper (12 shots)
12 PPG Acuff (12 shots)
7 PPG Grant (6 shots)
7 PPG Sommerville (6 shots)
6 PPG Dortch (5 shots)
5 PPG (JWill/Derkack (6 shots)
3 PPG JMike/Ogbole/Hayes/Martini(5 shots)

RU is averaging around 65 shots a game, but the biggest problem isn't talent.....the rebounding and defense are issues....right now, it's empty possessions because of turnovers.

Derkack arrived with a HIGH turnover track record and that's translated exactly as it did at Merrimack.....JMike is not a shooter or playmaker, he's more of a bring the ball up and hope the defense makes a mistake if he drives to the hoop.....while being a below average FT shooter, it's difficult to find a solution by playing Derkack and JMike major minutes.

The ONLY option at this stage is to play Dortch and ask him to harass opposing guards like Loyer, Tonje and let him play on the wing as a guard. He has "some" guard tendencies on tape and if you're going to suffer with poor shooting, you might as well get better length and size on the perimeter and let Dortch play defense like Caleb McConnell did.

The 5 freshman will cut down on perimeter shots by opponents, help clean the glass and offer some offensive rebounding and size.

Anything short of 70 minutes from Dortch, Grant and Sommerville is a no chance to win formula on either end of the court, scoring, rebounding and defense.

Commit to these 5 freshman the rest of January and the results will be much more cohesive on defense and allow Acuff to find more shots and passing opportunities.....he has found Grant on lobs and dunks, two straight games, just on a simple curl to the foul line. If you add Dortch as an option on the court, they can find easy layups or shots at the rim.

The roster is flawed. Pike cannot get this roster to the tourney.

It hurts my soul to watch our offense. When we'd make a nice pass so that someone got an open shot, I had to celebrate (it didn't happen often). It reminds of football in the late '90s when it was a cause for celebration if Rutgers got a first down.

I find myself waffling as to whether other coaches could get this team to the tournament. What happens if we had the Wisconsin or Purdue staff?

Sorry NJH...our best lineup with a healthy Harper is
Davis
Harper
JWill
Ace
Ogbole
Poor perimeter shooting and poor perimeter defense on jump shooters with that lineup.

Poor post defense in switching with Ogbole, he's not a viable option on either end.

The question I had last night....and i asked it over and over and over in the 2nd half.....could we have asked Grant to defend Kaufman - Ren and went with Harper Ace Acuff Grant and ?

Knight was pissed with Ogbole for not going out further and disrupting the high screen. We really miss Cliff and Myles

Ace, with his head down, completely missed a wide open Grant too. In Ace style he made the wrong play but the shot went in and he got fouled.

Time to start acuff over jwill. Ogbole gives up wayyyy too much space between him and who he’s guarding. I’m 5’7” and I can probably get a shot off with all that room. My starting 5:

1. D harp - 37 mins
2. Acuff - 25 mins
3.grant - 25 mins
4. Bailey - 37 mins
5. Somerville -30 mins

Bench
6. Jwill- 21 mins
7. Ogbole - 10 mins
8. Davis - 15 mins

Rest DNP

Jwill at best is 8 min bench player and JMike might get time at Monmouth off the bench next year.

The fact that Pike is using them as starters was the sign that this season was over.

i can pretty much remember all the posts here lauding J Will has an incredible player

turns out he was another transfer whiff
To be fair, when he was cleared to play he came in and we immediately started winning (briefly)

That starting lineup is essentially the last card Pike has to play.

I think martini and Hayes realize they can’t play at this level. Derkack is still delusional leading him to wave off a lottery pick.

It was a mirage - he did provide a spark for a few games. He needs to sit. RUUUUUUUUUU posting a starting lineup which is essentially the last card Pike has left to play - Grant, Sommerville, Harper, Bailey, and Acuff.

You lose me at the justification for Somerville. He's worse than Ogbole defensively and rebounding. Keep them at a 20/20 split and if one guy playing better a particular night, edge toward that guy.

They are both bad. Lathan can switch though. Any guard who gets the switch on ogbole is a guaranteed bucket. Its the best of a bad choice between those two.

I think you’re overstating Success for the dynamic duo a bit. They’ve been the best two players obviously and have lit up the scoreboard at times but their points have come at the expense of making players around them better, Bailey especially. Two ball dominant shot hunters, even when their shots are falling (which too often isn’t the case) isn’t good thing.

Bailey’s only pass yesterday for a possible assist to Grant was at his ankles

Shelby gives Harper an A- this year so far, and Bailey a B, if we parse “success” further.

The rest of the players, nothing above C and that includes Sommerville and Acuff.

I actually think Somerville is worse on the switch, but it's irrelevant, they both suck at it
We are splitting hairs here. Reason to favor Somerville is because *maybe* he can improve over the season. Ogbole is stagnant.

This only has Derkack over Grant due to Grant just starting to play and derkacks play against the St. Peter / merrimaxks of the world. Replace Derkack with Grant. And obviously Acuff who is finally looking like he’s decently recovered from his injury.

Haha, that line up is also amongst the worst in america at offensive rebounding and defense, and gives up an Efg% over 73%.

I wouldn't get too hung up on Derkack vrs Grant. The link you provided is really an indictment of Jamichael and Jeremiah. Analytically they have been woeful offensively, so it's not surprising ANY replacement(s) would be a "better" offensive 5 for us.

That said - I'm fully expecting a Dylan/Ace/Acuff/Grant/Somerville starting 5 soon. At the very least we will score some points.
