You cannot make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.
We recruited for years quick, athletic players to play a stunting, blitzing defense. Then Rossi thinks he can take these guys and put them in a flat plain 4 man Bull rush? NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! I saw it was a mistake but the middle of the second quarter, by half time it was clear as a bell. But we continued, to rush 4 or even 3 against a 5 man front. Only the second to last time WSU drive did we stunt and we stopped them on that series. The staff should have gone man to man, yes it is Monday morning QBing, ( I was saying that at the game) but it appears our staff did not have the comfort level with such a move. By going man to man, the advantage is you got 1-2-3 players you can use to blitz. And that is WSU QB’s flaw he did not handle pressure well. But we never pressured him with a 4 man rush. Bad defensive call by Rossi.
If you do not learn from your mistakes expect history to repeat them
Falk like Hackenberg holds the ball too long, also tend to get rattled with pressure. 8man zone D did not work against WSU and do not expect it to against psu we must go back to who we are, a blitzing D with man coverage. The coaches must have faith in our BDs ability to cover in a man situation and put the blitz back as out #1 plan of attack.
Running up the middle was stymied by a notorious poor defensive team; this weekend expect even less success.
Our O-line could not make or hold a block on inside running plays. The only play that could produce yards on was a power sweep. Even worse we got beat by a 4 man rush on passing. No Protection! No matter who the QB is in there will be no success unless the line can block!. Laviano Int. was yes his fault but there were 3 yes 3 out of 4 D-linemen chasing starting less than the 3 second mark from the snap. This was typical for the day. One sack came at 2.7seconds hell he did not even get back and set his feet and he got hit! This week’s game has some of the best linemen in the northeast. This team needs better O-line play to have success this season.
