Now that we're really in off-season mode with only 2 spots left to fill in our recruiting class I wanted to get into how I would shape my coaching staff, to position a program like Rutgers to succeed.

I am going to allocate assistant salaries based on a $3.3ish million budget for a 10 man coaching staff which I think our budget will be in 2019 if we bring in a new HC (excludes HC salary)

1) Head Coach- I would bring in a younger offensive minded head coach with a QB background. The reason being is that this will allow us to consistently have the same offensive system in place for the players to get comfortable with and will allow us to consistently recruit QB's at a high level as the QB's will know that they'll be playing in the same system as long as that HC is there and their coach specializes in QB's. Good QB play goes a long way. $3 mill. yr.

2) Killer recruiters for OL and DL coach. You HAVE TO have the guys up front to compete in this league or p5 football in general. I'd look to bring in younger guys ideally from urban communities who can connect well with these recruits. $400k each.

3) DC- I don't care if this guy can't talk to his wife. I want a guy who knows X's and O's and schemes. I don't care if he's a good recruiter, I don't care if he's older. We're looking for a guy who the HC can hand the keys to defense to. Being that in my scenario our HC will be offensive minded, it will be important to have a great X's and O's guy on defense and to ensure continuity with this coach I'd pay somewhere in the range of $600k/yr.

4) OC- I'd stray more towards a younger guy who is known as an up and comer who is creative and a good offensive mind. Being that the HC will play a very large role in the offense, it'd be okay to hire a guy who could be seen as a flight risk. I'd look for a coach in his lower 30's who has aspirations to be a HC and is seen as a leader. Hopefully this guy can help our HC recruit talent and then if he leaves it won't effect the O much as the HC will have his fingerprints all over the O. $450k/yr.

5) DB Coaches- DB's by and large are black kids. Not many white kids play in the secondary in major college football. If talk of race makes you uncomfortable, please bow out of this conversation as I will not be arguing this point. I'd look for 2 guys to coach my secondary like Aaron Henry and Matt Hewitt. With Henry coaching corners and Hewitt coaching safeties. Both have experienced high levels of success playing ball and now have experience on college football coaching staffs. Being that Hewitt is the less experienced of the 2 I'd pay him $250k and Henry $350k.

6) LB Coach- I'd have the DC double up as LB coach. Now if the DC has experience coaching the secondary, I'd have him double up as a Safety/Corner coach and hire a separate LB coach. I think it's very important to have a smart x's and o's (more so than a great recruiter) LB coach as there are a lot of keys to read as a LB and run fits are absolute crucial.

7) Running Backs Coach- I'd ideally like to have a younger guy who has recently played running back. For example a guy a guy who had a cup of coffee in the NFL and has recently had some GA experience at a top program or RB coach already and a smaller program. Being that RB's aren't too hard to find, I think this is a coach you could save some money on. $200k.

8) TE/FB Coach- Give me a guy like Okruch. Just a throwback old school guy with a little bit of swag. He'll add some experience to the staff as well. $200k

9) ST Coordinator- Give me a guy who really knows specials, x's and o's take precedence over being a killer recruiter here for me. I'd like to see us at least attempt to block some FG's, and make teams have to think when our specials take the field with our next staff. $250k

10) WR Coach- not the hardest position in the world to teach so recruiting is of the utmost importance here. We can probably get away with puing someone $250k here.

This is my ideal staff.
