This game is a little confusing in my mind as it looked like the coaches finally had a pretty decent game plan and mixed it up a bit but that it was not always executed well.
I'll start with QB because like everyone else, I am still a bit baffled. Without getting into who should be QB, I don't care if it is Charlie Brown, why are we not even trying to stretch the field even just a bit? And I see our FB's and TE's getting open over the middle, how come we don't send Grant across the middle more often?
Anyway- that is my concern here. not much different then anyone else. This is the area I give game calling a fail
RB- Saw a good number of calls to get the guys outside and finally got the ball in Grant's hands even though it didn't work. The result did't matter so much but it at least keeps the defense honest- see throwing the ball deep every once in a while. Overall- very good game calling
OL - The interior line looked to have a very good game. Great job in opening holes, pulling and staying on blocks. Lumpkin had a decent game- good but not great. Denman, had a rough game and has to start cleaning up his penalties. Seems like he has at least one drive killer per game. He got beat by that number 10 dude but it makes me think back to the conversations with the OL I used to have. One guy can really stand out as having a bad game vs a team mate but it may be because his guy was so muh better then the guys your team mates had to block. Overall- penalties have to stop on this OL but I liked what I saw in general. They will have to get much better in the next few weeks but game calling for this unit was good.
TE/WR - incomplete as I was not at the game. On TV, you can only go by what they show you. I have no idea if they were trying to go deep and couldn't get separation or if at times when CL had to break the pocket, did they help him out with blocking and or coming back to him. Game calling has to mirror the QB game calling.
DL - Major difference in this game. Was it because KU is that bad? If so, why couldn't we get that push against a horrific PSU OL? First half of the game, the KU QB had pressure in his face all the time. For the most part, they held well against the run. - I give the coaches a good score for their gameplan here. BTW- Hogan looks like he could be a force.
LB - Saw them put more pressure on the QB and mixed it up on the LOS pre snaps quite a bit. We need more of this going forward. Thought the game plan was pretty good for these guys.
DB's - Still young and will get burnt at times and or miss some tackles(need more S&C) Thought the coaches let them play more this time. Hester looks like the real deal- made some mistakes but he seems very much like Cioffe- has a nose for the ball. I think play calling for these guys was also much better.
ST's- game calling very good- good mix of trying to block the punts and also trying to set back a little. Damn, Grant almost had another return!
As I said- the coaching staff- outside of QB, mixed it up much more today and gave us more of what we have been asking for on thses boards. If not for some executional mistakes, we more than likely win this one by 20+. This was a game that seemed to never be in doubt and seemed we could almost do things at will. The fact we only won by two scores is a little misleading. Happy to see something more in the game calling but also worried about the mistakes- those mistakes will kill us in the next few weeks if we cant fix them.
