So we just got the bad news, and now we are looking for the best care possible. Some of the folks on our short list are NJ spine center in Chatham, spine center of nj at Rutgers (UMDNJ), and Columbia neurosurgery's Ridgewood office. Hoping surgery will not be necessary. Any advice would be welcome. We don't really trust the chiro who ordered the MRI.

One day I was bored in the gym. I started playing around and doing shrugs with 450lbs on a Smith rack. I felt nothing untoward but few days latter I had pain in the back. That got worse over next few months. I got MRI and had herniated disk. Doctor wanted PT. I went to a chiro. Within 2 weeks all pain was gone. I've been good since thank God and its been 15 years. Haven't even been to a chiro in 14 years. I also once had a double whiplash after being hit from behind in daisy chain accident. My neck hurt two years until chiro fixed that too. Actually if was because a chiro fixed the neck that I went to one for the back
I was diagnosed with herniated and bulging discs in my neck area several years ago. I go for treatment called spinal decompression at my chiropractors office's, who is great by the way. The way spinal decompression for the cervical area works is you lay on a table and your head is strapped to a machine, which gently tugs on your neck to relieve the pressure that is on your nerves. It lasts about 15 minutes and I go weekly. The therapy that I receive has just about eliminated all of my symptoms (general pain, pinching feeling, numbness in arm). While it won't fix the problem I am ok with that as long as I don't have to have surgery. My chiropractor is Glenn Bager and his practice is called Colonia Spine and Wellness. The link is below.

People really trust Chiros for this? Not judging just surprised...I certainly can't argue with your results. Anyone have a good PT experience non-chiro?
In my case mechanical events event caused a physical alteration. A chiro just initiated a mechanical alteration in reverse direction. If a column on a porch deteriorates you call a carpenter and not an architect. Plus a lot of places wont heal without circulation. Some massage and manipulation do wonders. I also got a lot from the electrical stimulation the chiro used. Reminded me of playing football in college and getting ultrasound stim for an ankle tendon injury that wasn't healing on its own. Six weeks of rest did little. Six sessions of ultrasound and I was back to playing
Chiros manage and nothing else. They don't "fix" anything. It is possible that the disc could slip back into place but I would go see a medical doctor
Had a back problem and went to University Orthopedics - problem solved without surgery.
They are in Princeton but have their main office in Somerset right off of Easton Ave just before I-287. They take care of all Rutgers & Princeton University teams and some US Olympic squads. They are the best in the area. My daughter also had her ACL surgery repaired by this group.

Hospital for Special Surgery, NYC They'll tell you if she needs surgery and if not, what the next steps are.
