I think if you look at it as a whole, then you can say it's going to be a bit messy, and challenging...There are going to be some hard conversations going on all over the country in the next few months. You can already see things moving around lacrosse between the portal and kids deciding to leave and or withdraw from school.
This is going to be very interesting for kids and their families as almost no one is a full scholarship kid which means that it is going to be an additional expense (as you know.)
If they are granting waivers for all years that means that next years freshman class is going to be gigantic for most teams (B1G would average about 25 except JHU which would be 36) as you said this could be a problem for the next couple of classes after this (2021 and 2022). things are going to be very interesting.
How many players come back to Rutgers? We will see.
Yes, I know and I am sure that you are actively having conversations with both of them as they are both in different places in the athletic career and If I recall correctly son #1 has a pretty nice internship waiting for him this summer back in your home state. as you know I have a 2021 who is or was in the middle of the recruiting process and believe me when I tell you it is a brave new world and we are now beginning to consider a PG year for him to get him clear of some of this. I actually think this may be worse for the kids already in college that may (as you said) not be getting playing time or are buried on the 4th midfield line. those kids may simply get cut is a numbers crunch but, the interesting thing that I did not really realize was that theNCAA is giving the school scholarship relief based on the school choice. So it sounds like the school can simply say no we will not expand your scholarships at all and you need to find a way to make your current numbers work. Which would force many coaches to simply make decisions not to allow repeat seniors to stay. Think about how hard the conversation is going to be. Kid comes in and says, yea coach i can not wait to come back for next year, and the coach says "Well Johnny we need to talk".I think if you look at it as a whole, then you can say it's going to be a bit messy, and challenging...
But when you break it down, team by team, each coach and staff recruit differently, manage rosters differently and some have more attrition...
IMO, it will be a 2-3 year issue, max...and yes, some kids are going to jump to the portal if they feel playing time won't be available, some opportunities will be there for coaches to get transfers that might help and I project that the D1 classes for 2021 and 2022 kids will be smaller...if a school normally takes 12, they might take just 8/9 kids in these years...so it does impact high schoolers now...
But I'll stand by my initial thoughts...many kids will not use the extra year...and here's why in no order...
1.) They don't play anyway (buried on the depth chart)...they're not playing an extra year
2.) Injuries or just retire...for some kids, 4 years is enough...don't forget, the season was shortened, but they all played a full slate of fall ball and preseason workouts...kids get tired and beat up
3.) Attrition...in a 12 man class...you will always have a few (2-3) that quit or leave
4.) Life is calling...guys have jobs lined up, med school and they want to move on...
5.) Money...these are not full rides...parents and kids need to evaluate the financial cost...that's real
I've got two guys as you know Family...both have a very different opinion on this as to what they are thinking...it's very interesting
Each staff and team will navigate this differently

Personally, i have had a couple of kids reach out or that I know of that have made decisions one went into the Portal, one is 90% sure he is done with lacrosse and one is definitely going back ( not all Rutgers kids)
Agree my daughter plays division 2 lacrosse and there are many factors like you say she is a senior and a business major so for her to play she has to go back to school for her MBA and some of her senior friends are going to other grad schools and others won’t come back for some of the other reasons noted so then her decision to play again is this will be different because it won’t be like her senior year without some of those fellow senior. So we will see just letting the shock of this set in.I think if you look at it as a whole, then you can say it's going to be a bit messy, and challenging...

Two things...you are spot on from the personal side of this...kids come in as a specific class...they build bonds and relationships...if your daughter sees most of her classmates moving on and graduating and not coming back...that leaves a void, and maybe she says "my good friends/teammates are gone...I don't want to come back"...those are real parts of this conversation...and, if they don't want to get a masters, or, if they have a job, then they are probably not coming back...and I can see why...Agree my daughter plays division 2 lacrosse and there are many factors like you say she is a senior and a business major so for her to play she has to go back to school for her MBA and some of her senior friends are going to other grad schools and others won’t come back for some of the other reasons noted so then her decision to play again is this will be different because it won’t be like her senior year without some of those fellow senior. Question though are they just giving the seniors the year back or are all the grades getting the year back?

Golf had only 1 senior Tony Jiang who has qualified for the China Tour so if that tour is held, he may decide to leave RU and join the Tour. If it is cancelled, he may come back. Talking about golf team. All the rest get a redshirt year which is great as we have improved greatly.
Thanks how are you kids doing going from playing lacrosse to being almost prisoners in the house mine going crazy!!Two things...you are spot on from the personal side of this...kids come in as a specific class...they build bonds and relationships...if your daughter sees most of her classmates moving on and graduating and not coming back...that leaves a void, and maybe she says "my good friends/teammates are gone...I don't want to come back"...those are real parts of this conversation...and, if they don't want to get a masters, or, if they have a job, then they are probably not coming back...and I can see why...
Second, the waiver is for all spring sport athletes...so yes, kids that were freshman this year also get the waiver...
The issue with giving all the kids an extra year is going to affect the high school kids for the next few years as teams won't be able to recruit as many players because they will have too many on the squads etc. I believe though not as many seniors as we think will take advantage of the extra year for various reasons as I stated above in the post about my daughterGolf had only 1 senior Tony Jiang who has qualified for the China Tour so if that tour is held, he may decide to leave RU and join the Tour. It's been an adjustment...but they're both busy doing the online class thing...then they are working out...after that, they're bored...my grocery bill is out of hand. It's fun to have them home...but assuming we can get beyond this and school starts in the fall...I'll be good with one heading back to NJ and the other heading back to Baltimore in August :)Thanks how are you kids doing going from playing lacrosse to being almost prisoners in the house mine going crazy!!
I agree. With the shortned draft I would imagine there is a good chance both murray and rutkowski return along with the incoming juco. There are going to be a number of quality players who might not have opportunities they thought they had at southern programs. We could also potentially pick up a quality transfer or two.The way I see it, this will be particularly good for RU baseball. We had a discussion on this board about the coach having a roster well under the limit. This will mean he can accommodate both the incoming and the extra year holdovers. In addition, he signed a couple of quality junior college pitchers. If they graduate as planned, they can come in with three years of eligibility rather than two.
