NCAA Tournament 1st Round: No. 21/23 Rutgers Women's Basketball vs. BYU

A minute and a half into the second quarter and RU's lead grows to five: 18-13.

BYU closing the gap from the free thrown line. Oof! A three-pointer ties the game at 18 with 7:46 left in the first half.

Arella a mind-boggling 2 for five from the charity stripe. She had six points in 1Q.

BYU takes the lead, 20-19, with just over seven minutes left in 2Q.

There are two threads going. Is there a way to combine them?

BYU leads 24-20 at the TV timeout. 4:27 left in the half.

Thank you, Diamond. A three and a rebound. RU with a chance to retake the lead.

Arella bounces back. RU with a six-point run to get the lead--okay, and eight-point run. RU 28-24 with 1:16 in 2Q.

RU leads at the half, 30-24.

Scarlet Knights shooting 47.8% from the field with a woeful 1-5 from 3-pt land.

Eight steals by RU in the first half. Johnson and Guirantes in double figures for points. Mack with three fouls.

Looked like Diamond limping off the court at halftime. Think she hurt something on that last basket. Hope it’s nothing serious.

Massive choke job kicking this game away just like the men. At least the torture for the year is over.

RU scored more points in the fourth quarter than the first quarter. BYU played lights out for a few minutes in a 40-minute game and won. For those saying Diamond should have been a bigger part of the offense, is she not the point guard? She can call her own number. I think that blast by BYU rattled the Scarlet Knights. They recovered and got it back to a one-point game; BYU held on to the lead at the end.

Some of you criticise RU for not guarding the three but only when the other teams makes them. RU guards the three and gets called for a foul, then you lament that the RU player made a stupid foul.

Sad for Gilles, Guirantes, and Mack. I hope the loss is fuel for the rest of the team.

I don't know what you've seen this season, but what I've observed is that the coaching staff has directed the point guard play, even when Zippy started at point. I also have not seen plays run for her or sets that open it up for her to work. Also, it has to be stressed in the huddle that others should look for her spotting up for open threes. Too many times, a tough shot is forced up inside while she or Martino are standing open for three looks.

Some teams' best chance to beat us is to get hot from three. We could surely could have done better against that. Scouting report told you the two that shoot it really well. You don't want open looks. Make them put it on the floor, at least. If players foul on D, let them take responsibility. If the refs make poor calls, let's acknowledge it and call it out.

You're talking a bit about me cause that's what said about THIS game. But isnt that what defensive coaching and adjustments are all about? You try to take away what is working for the other team?
Same for Diamond. She makes all the desicions out there so even if the coach says shoot more, she would decide not to?

RU shot 47% from the field for the game, and Arella and Diamond combined to 15-25 from the field. The problem was turnovers and giving up a shocking 26pts in the 4th quarter (more than they gave up the entire 1st half).

Exactly. To me, the defense really felt out of sync when Mack picked up her 4th foul. Otherwise, no explanation - a lot of unforced TOs throughout the game and zero rebounding overall. Giles who is usually pretty sure-handed on the boards had an off day.
