ND's Kelly looking for the exit?

Herman didn't say he wasn't leaving. He said reports of him having a deal with LSU were false. They were

I'd have to assume Notre Dame is looking to show him the exit. He's probably looking to beat them to the punch.

The USC fans were snarkily chanting one more year at the end of the game yesterday in Kelly's honor.

I doubt this marriage is ending this year. He is accountable for this mess and will be given at least another year to clean it up.

I thought Swarbrick already said he's coming back next year.

Unusual to think of a coach leaving ND voluntarily. I guess it would depend on what kind of landing spot he'd be able to find. Andersen left Wisconsin for Oregon State so who knows what's going through a guy's mind.

Kelly seems like the type that has the ego to quit instead of giving his employer the chance to fire him. Many employees are that way, almost a way to get a permanent one up on a boss they hate.

I would not be surprised if the Frenchies fired Kelly even if the AD said he will be back next year. I know for certain he has been reprimanded for his sideline behavior, there has been recent academic misconduct, and his player behavior has been suspect. Yesterdays kick to the head of an unconscious player was the most recent, visible example. Notre Dame alumni and administrators are quite sensitive to PR problems, and anything that paints the university in a bad public light weighs as heavy as the win-loss record. Perhaps heavier. They came down on him for all the screaming he did on the sidelines as it was popular broadcast fodder. I really think Kelly is on thin ice.

Notre Dame needs to join a conference.

They have seen that to compete physically, they need to take some academic and behavior risks. It is over for their ability to take the best talent nationally. They need a conference or they risk playing themselves out of their special status completely.

They get $15M a year from NBC through 2015. I don't know what their share of ACC monies for basketball and whatnot comes to. The Big Ten schools will double that $15M. Make it 16.. take in Notre Dame and Texas... or even Kansas.. or Georgia Tech or UVA..

Found a story discussing this ND to a conference thing

I really do not want to see GTech's cut-blocking OL in the conference. They should just outlaw cut blocks. And while we are at it, outlaw the blocking downfield on passes behind the LOS... if it is a forward pass.. no blocking beyond the LOS until the ball is caught.

Brian Kelly had better teams at Cincinnati than Notre Dame. If the Big East stayed together and he never left Cincinnati I believe he would have played in a NC game, his cincy teams were ferocious. The ND job was not a good fit for him. Honestly I would love to have him here at Rutgers, but Kelly would tell Barchi, Hobbs and the Star-Ledger to go $&@/ themselves. Brian Kelly would do well coaching for WV, Miami or LSU there his personality and drive would be appreciated.

Texas AD said that Strong was coming back, too, a couple of weeks ago.

He put the kid back in and he proceeded to purposely step on a USC player's ankle while on the ground.

Can understand Brian Kelly wanting to be someplace else - but have to wonder where he would be strongly desired right now - desired enough to put forward an offer that would be worth making the move - rather than staying in South Bend for a bit longer

Just as soon as ND stops having to pay Charlie Weiss they're gonna can Kelly.

I thought they paid off Weis's buyout this summer

Yes, I saw that. The kid's behavior reminded me of Ndamukong Suh. I found it interesting though that the Peppers push/punch was on ESPN but not the Frenchy kid's gaffes. Can't kill the golden TV goose I guess.
