Seriously thinking about making the trip to Seattle Labor Day weekend to witness the beginning of the HCCA era at RU. When is the best time to search for cheap air fares? Are they generally cheaper farther away from the event? I went on Travelocity and got a R/T quote for $351 from EWR with good times going and coming. That seemed pretty good to me. Appreciate any advice from experienced travelers.

That's a very good rate. I think the rates go up as the flight fills up. Might want to lock that in. You might not be the only one flying out for the game.

Agree, that is a darn good rate. Lock it up.

350 r/t from EWR to SEA is a pretty good fare. It won't get lower.

You will kick yourself if you wind up paying 100 more per ticket hoping to save another 25 per ticket. Agree, buy it now if you know you are going to make the trip.

totally correct - (you are not goingto see some $99 round trip fare ) - but you will see this go up as you get closer -
any minor saving that might occur will likely come with unappealing scheduling - one or two connections & significant layover times

This far in advance, don't be surprised if your flight gets changed (slightly different time, different plane type).

That is a great Airfare.
We are planning the same trip and have only seen $490 R/T ( on United). Although when we check the Seat Maps on all Flights the Seats are nearly 100% empty. This makes me think the Airlines are just fishing for early high fare spenders and will have to drop Fares in the near future ( Oil at a 4 year low should help).

Hotels are incredibly high if you stay in downtown Seattle.
For the WSU game we stayed out in the suburbs ( Bothell). Rates are good in Kirkland, Bellevue, etc.

$350 to fly round trip (presumably) non-stop across country with favorable times sounds pretty darn good to me.

If those flights are non-stop, lock them in now. Even if flight times change, and they normally do when booking this far in advance, you won't have to worry about the changes affecting any connecting flights.

By today's inflated standards for airline charges, that is a great rate.

Thanks to all who offered advice. I just booked the flight. I paid $ 11 more and got a non-stop going out from EWR at 5:25 PM. The timing couldn't be better. Arrives in SEA at 8:35 so I should be able to make any pre game meetups. I expect to see a lot of RU people on that 5:25 flight.

Good move! Also, you may want to follow the Rutgers Club of Seattle on Facebook. They organized a gathering the night before the game at a local sports bar downtown last year prior to the WSU game. I am looking forward to the trip myself! Beat the Huskies!

Hotel prices have shot up dramatically in the past month for all major brands. We stayed at the Inn at the Market (across from Pike Street Market) for the WSU game and managed to get back in there again for Labor Day weekend. The place is now sold out. Marriott, Hyatt and Hilton properties near the waterfront are priced over $400/night (only $300 a few weeks back) and in Pioneer Square are now over $300/night. May want to check into available B&Bs that dot the Seattle area.

Check out the nearby suburbs.... Only 20-30 minutes from downtown Seattle.
The cost is less than half of the Hotels in the city.

I visited UW in the summer and stayed at the Hotel Deca near campus, which is about two blocks from University Ave. (AKA "The Ave" or "U District") and the NW corner of the campus. Husky Stadium is a long (and hilly) walk on the SE and water side of the campus. The hotel was older, but modernized with no coffee makers in the room (they gave me voucher for the coffee place in the lobby) I'd avoid that area. Gotta warn you that "The Ave", at least near that hotel is is fairly seedy with a good number of homeless and vagrants, including some young and hipster-looking folks (yes, it's Seattle after all) and some of them from what I've been told by some UW folks are not harmless. You know it's not cool when the Washington State Patrol (their state police) has a officer stationed at the corner of University and 45th on foot in the late Monday afternoon in July. That section of the Ave reminded me of 1970s era George Street with 2015 era stores. Better to stay in downtown or suburbs IMO. On the other hands, University Village, which is due north of Husky Stadium and NE of campus is a very nice outdoor mall and worth your time for hanging out, eating, drinking before or after the game. You may want to park in it's deck and walk to Husky Stadium (you can see the stadium) from there because the main road to the stadium (Montlake Blvd NE) was a traffic disaster from what I saw.
