New Baseball Commit

Just saw on Twitter we got a baseball commit. Anyone know anything about him?

From a quick internet search, Prep Baseball Report has scouted the following -- RU commit Jacob Newman is a 6'3", 193-pound RHP out of Illinois, throws three pitches -- fastball, curveball, changeup. FB sits 85-88, CURVE is 70-73, CHANGE is 79-82.

Not sure how accurate this information is. Nice to see our revamped coaching staff reaching past state borders for talent. I think it's an exciting time for RU baseball -- could be pretty competitive in the spring.

Expanding our borders is a plus. Too, targeting JUCOs and transfers to bolster lineups is SOP at most Div-1 programs, including our brethren St. Jacks and The Shoe. Rutgers is same old same old. Someone needs to remind the coach and AD that we are not competing in the Ivy League.

You really don't like Litterio, do you?

Our catching commit Peter Serruto from Millburn High School, is basically a lock to be drafted high this June, and forego college.

It is not personal. But I am not seeing the necessary changes. We have to do more than participate. And it is not a matter of changing staff. We need to change what we are doing, primarily in roster-building. As per usual, we are behind the curve, especially with JUCOs and transfers. The AD and coach need to do whatever it takes to put us on equal footing with our conference opponents. We can not compete with one arm tied behind our back.

I guess you don't give a sh-t about loosing one of the best catching prospects in the country

Zap...let him go he is on a roll....

Will be talking about the Germans bombing Pearl Harbor soon...lol

The problem with losing Peter Serruto for most is....we never really had him because even during this past year the talk of draft was never ending and assumed he would be high enough that all that was left was the bonus and contract.

For what it is worth,,,not much...he is not de-committing and going south.

The kid loves RU, there is no other place he'd play college baseball...his dad is close friends with the Virginia head baseball coach and Peter has no interest in them.
I love the fact Peter is playing football this fall.
The whole situation has to play out, his defensive skills are unquestioned, but he's Gotta hit this spring

Zap,
Do you know what, if anything in particular, is so attractive to Cerruto about Rutgers and/or Rutgers baseball? Does he like the campus, the baseball staff, being close to home, or playing in the B1G? Or something else?

His dad raised him an RU sports fan, so the kid loves it. His dad was a state champ wrestler and was captain of UVA team.

They both like Litterio, but are convinced he will be gone soon, Peter loves all the new staff.
Pretty sure he's gonna recieve a lot of money as an 18 year old this June...our loss.

Is his father Mark? Finished 3rd in 1976 at 188 and back then they didn't wrestle back all the way to 8th place so he finished 5th to 8th in 1975 and 1974.

I get the embellished version from Mark
I did think he graduated in 75

Michigan baseball recruiting article. Players from MI, IL, WA, a JUCO transfer who played his freshman year at Texas, WI, CA, NY. Four players were drafted in 2017. Gatorade Players of the Year in the states of Washington and Wisconsin.

This article includes a profile of Ohio State's recruiting class, which includes JUCO's arriving at the shortstop and centerfield positions.

lol here we go with the JUCO's again...also I'm not sure if we fund baseball at OOS or in-state levels which, until we do, makes it difficult to attract out-of-state kids due to the lack of scholarship funds available (as compared with a program fully-funded at OOS costs). Also, there's plenty of talent to keep home, in NJ, just need to keep kids from going to Monmouth, Seton Hall, St. John's, etc. because the best kids are going to continue to head south (unfortunately).

Without changes, and staying the path you suggest, we are merely participating, not competing. Same old, same old. Pathetic.

We have enough talent to win. It needs to be coached---shown how to hit, field correctly, run the bases. Play out side the box, with unrelenting pressure on the other guys--completely unorthodox--run them out of the park. Win with exciting, good fundamental baseball & good & really good players will want to come.

We are not even remotely close to having the pitching or pop in the lineup to compete in the Big Ten. You just cannot compete in the Big Ten solely recruiting the NJ/NY area and not bolstering your lineup and roster with JUCO players.
Here are the year end Big Ten baseball awards. Rutgers had three third team honorees and no one on the All-Freshmen team.
