Rutgers’ next chapter demands a visionary president | Opinion
Rutgers has outgrown its regional identity and now stands as a national research powerhouse, requiring a leader with the ambition and vision to match its potential.
I noticed the article did not mention athletics though.
I would think you need to have a PhD. Does Murphy? IdkIt’s not Murphy, right? I’ve heard that rumor in two different settings in the past few weeks.

Ohio State’s president, Ted Carter, doesn’t have PhD or a master’s degree.I would think you need to have a PhD. Does Murphy? Idk
It’ll leak at some point but I’d imagine they’ll cut it as close to the BOG meeting on the 25th as possible before announcing. Less time for the usual suspects to organize and protest against whoever’s pickedIt's April, so I would expect an announcement any day. After all, the new president is supposed to take over July 1. Once he or she is on board, the search for a new AD can move forward.
If there is an official announcement this month (and I would be surprised if there's not) it will be at the BOG meeting because BOG makes the official decision. The question is whether the names of the final candidates, or at least of the leading candidate, will leak before then as they sometimes do.It’ll leak at some point but I’d imagine they’ll cut it as close to the BOG meeting on the 25th as possible before announcing. April 24th Board of Governors meeting agenda is out.Anybody got a name?
You'll notice that the agenda includes a closed session. Because the hiring of a president is a personnel matter, it wouldl be discussed and decided there, not in open session.April 24th Board of Governors meeting agenda is out.
Lots on there like student housing at Helix, approving KPMG as auditor, but nothing on a new president.
Maybe the agenda will be amended to add the new president's hiring. Adding something that important at the last moment seems like bad practice though.
Appreciate your input. We'll find out next week whether Rutgers has a new president. You'll notice that the agenda includes a closed session. Because the hiring of a president is a personnel matter, it would be discussed and decided there, not in open session.
That doesn't make any sense. Holloway announced his retirement at the beginning of the school year. That wasn't ideal -- it's better for a President or Dean to announce his retirement in May of the previous year -- but it's enough time for a search committee to be appointed and to do its work. Interviews should be long since over by now. There must be some other problem, such as deadlock.Kevin McConnell said the hiring has been put off till interviews are completed. As you know Kevin retires this June. Could drag into the summer because this is how RU operates, inefficiently with road blocks put up periodically.
Heard third hand through a donor that it may be Tammy Murphy. I doubt that Murphy is a candidate. I don't see why he would want to be President of Rutgers. He can get a much more lucrative job or, if he wants to stay in politics, a better launching pad for a future candidacy.
She has no degree beyond a B.A. She served for about four years as a member of the Board of Visitors (the equivalent of Rutgers' Board of Governors) of her alma mater, the University of Virginia. Those seem like slim qualifications. But I guess she needs a job with her husband leaving office and with her Senate campaign having fallen through.Heard third hand through a donor that it may be Tammy Murphy. Sounds like BS.
Don't forget the boards of Rumson Country Day School and Phillips Andover...She has no degree beyond a B.A. She served for about four years as a member of the Board of Visitors (the equivalent of Rutgers' Board of Governors) of her alma mater, the University of Virginia. The meeting is at noon todayThe BOG meets tomorrow -- we may know more after that. This would normally be the time to appoint a new President.
You're correct -- thanks for the correction! The meeting is at noon today
No problem. This is the quietest search for a Rutgers President everYou're correct -- thanks for the correction!
True! The closed session begins at 12:05.No problem. This is the quietest search for a Rutgers President ever

Yes. So it's possible they're not ready. But their next regular meeting is in June. My guess is they'd have a special meeting next month; June is awfully late to get someone on board on July 1.If they actually have gone through the process and have a candidate that will be selected in this meeting without anything leaking, I'll be very impressed.
There is also a rumor that her husband is a possibility. At least he has a Harvard degree and a Wharton MBA. But (as I think I've said above) why would he want it? There are jobs that are much more lucrative and offer a better springboard for a return to politics.Heard third hand through a donor that it may be Tammy Murphy. Sounds like BS.
We've had our DEI president, with Holloway's talk of "the beloved community." My uninformed guess is that we're heading in a different direction this time.Look like a mess
We can hope dei isn't at play
That rumor has legs with a NJ.com story that the Gov was approached and he has no interest. There's a thread on the football board now. He would be a disaster of a President. For that matter, any former Gov should not be the President of the State's flagship university, IMO.There is also a rumor that her husband is a possibility. If he says he has no interest, then shouldn't the rumor's legs fall off? Of course, the scary thing is that he was approached! That rumor has legs with a NJ.com story that the Gov was approached and he has no interest. There's a thread on the football board now. I can think of two politicians who became university presidents. Bob Kerrey, who had been governor and later senator from Nebraska, served for almost a decade as president of The New School in Manhattan; and Ben Sasse, also a senator from Nebraska, who had a disastrous year as president of the University of Florida (where he tripled the budget of the president's office and hired a lot of his former senate staff.
And I can think of two individuals who went from being university presidents to public office: Woodrow Wilson, who was president of Princeton before being elected as governor of New Jersey and, of course, later President; and Dwight Eisenhower, who was president of Columbia before becoming President.
