If a coach says something as direct as he wants his team to take less 3s you put stock in it SMH
You cannot put stock in the 4th or 5th options being a focal point of offense.
Let's look at the comments which are all in essence addressing the point that we shot poorly from 3.....what do you want him to say, we are going to keep shooting them?
We saw the offseason comments about improvements in a lot of areas with players and people ran with them after a couple of games. The strength of the scoring and roster isn't going to happen because of post ups. It just is a soundbite that reminds the guards to give our bigs a couple more opportunities.
These options are only as good as the defense played by the opponent. A defense playing or scouting RU is not concerned about post up points or our bigs making passes out of double teams in the post.
Every team has two options against post up offense.
A) Stay home or with the shooters and expect the defensive player to handle the match up, 1 on 1.
B) what most teams do when they arent quite sure, they teach their weakside defenders to attack the post and double team....that eliminates most post up moves because, facing up eliminates a drive vs a double and you're hoping for a quicker shot or a shot that's rushed.
Most bigs aren't quick, decisive or athletic enough to split a double or able to jump shoot over an opponent with size.
The defense an opponent plays dictates where the shots come from, and the scouting reports are geared to stop our perimeter shooting from getting space. Thiam is crowded, Baker is focused upon and Kiss is still adjusting to how to play at the speed of Power 5 / 6 opponents that have quickness and similar size.
Ideally, the 4th and 5th options score and get something done when they have post ups. I think Carter is the best option to score inside on the block vs Columbia and Maine...Eugene should be able to score inside but his post ups have limited ball movement.
I would prefer to see Carter or Myles posting up and Eugene set up at the 3 point line. Crazy as it sounds, Eugene can do both, score from the post and get his feet set and knock down a stationary 3.
Eugene in the post means the other big isnt in the post and has to create space by being near the foul line or away from the hoop. Since Carter, Myles, Doucoure are not 3 point shooters, your spacing and offense aren't impacting the opponent, if your big cant shoot, dribble, or pass.
My post ups are Myles or Shaq Carter and that's about it. Either getting to 10 or more points or 7 to 8 shot attempts will balance the offense and likely reduce shot attempts for others. If they score and make passes out of doubles and don't turn the ball over, great.
I just don't see post ups as some sudden change going forward. The rosters strength for the future are Harper and Mathis driving/slashing and generating offense when the plays break down....and taking a couple of threes once the drives are successful.
