Newman: Pike Talks Offense and More

Less 3s? More post ups? Yikes. We have only one guy who can post up lol. The other things I agree with.

I wouldn't put too much into any media comments....the defense of the opponent dictates where the ball should go and who should "post up"... no opponent goes into a matchup thinking about post offense...its stop Baker and Kiss from getting open 3s.

If Columbia or anyone gets beat by Eugene or Myles Johnson scoring from the post, they'll take their chances.

The key for any player is making passes out of a double team. Every opponent doubles the post if the player isn't capable of making a good pass or isnt clean with the ball, footwork etc.

This article is about maybe making sure Baker and Kiss or even Eugene give the hard working bigs a couple more touches....i expect a lot more Shaq Carter and Myles Johnson the rest of the B1G slate. Who plays in the post the next 2 games is TBD.

If a coach says something as direct as he wants his team to take less 3s you put stock in it SMH

Can't read the article from where I am sitting.

I have been disappointed by some of the shots we have taken early in the shot clock that I feel we could get at any time. To me I want to take quality 3 point attempts and not contested or lightly contested ones early in the shot clock.

We have quite a few people on this team capable of doing damage on the low post. Most of them, in the past, have shown themselves of willing passers. To me the 2 best opportunity to get great 3 point looks is in transition AND going inside out.

I am pleased that Pikiell is addressing poor offensive flow we have seen over the past 3 or 4 games. The answer is balance in where the basketball is and who is touching it.

I am fine with less 3's.

I want to see Harper Jr in the paint more, Mathis driving more, etc.

Kiss has to work on his handle to be effective driving.

Our young bloods are shooting 3's at a really low rate. That is not just something that is going to change quickly.

They are freshman, and they will improve. It will unlikely be in the next three games, though.

You cannot put stock in the 4th or 5th options being a focal point of offense.

Let's look at the comments which are all in essence addressing the point that we shot poorly from 3.....what do you want him to say, we are going to keep shooting them?

We saw the offseason comments about improvements in a lot of areas with players and people ran with them after a couple of games. The strength of the scoring and roster isn't going to happen because of post ups. It just is a soundbite that reminds the guards to give our bigs a couple more opportunities.

These options are only as good as the defense played by the opponent. A defense playing or scouting RU is not concerned about post up points or our bigs making passes out of double teams in the post.

Every team has two options against post up offense.

A) Stay home or with the shooters and expect the defensive player to handle the match up, 1 on 1.

B) what most teams do when they arent quite sure, they teach their weakside defenders to attack the post and double team....that eliminates most post up moves because, facing up eliminates a drive vs a double and you're hoping for a quicker shot or a shot that's rushed.

Most bigs aren't quick, decisive or athletic enough to split a double or able to jump shoot over an opponent with size.

The defense an opponent plays dictates where the shots come from, and the scouting reports are geared to stop our perimeter shooting from getting space. Thiam is crowded, Baker is focused upon and Kiss is still adjusting to how to play at the speed of Power 5 / 6 opponents that have quickness and similar size.

Ideally, the 4th and 5th options score and get something done when they have post ups. I think Carter is the best option to score inside on the block vs Columbia and Maine...Eugene should be able to score inside but his post ups have limited ball movement.

I would prefer to see Carter or Myles posting up and Eugene set up at the 3 point line. Crazy as it sounds, Eugene can do both, score from the post and get his feet set and knock down a stationary 3.

Eugene in the post means the other big isnt in the post and has to create space by being near the foul line or away from the hoop. Since Carter, Myles, Doucoure are not 3 point shooters, your spacing and offense aren't impacting the opponent, if your big cant shoot, dribble, or pass.

My post ups are Myles or Shaq Carter and that's about it. Either getting to 10 or more points or 7 to 8 shot attempts will balance the offense and likely reduce shot attempts for others. If they score and make passes out of doubles and don't turn the ball over, great.

I just don't see post ups as some sudden change going forward. The rosters strength for the future are Harper and Mathis driving/slashing and generating offense when the plays break down....and taking a couple of threes once the drives are successful.

Haven't looked at Maine or Columbia's roster.

Eugene has the quickness on the blocks against smaller opponents to demand a double team. Freshman and sophomore Eugene was a very willing passer. Against Columbia and Maine I don't see the need to play bigs. I'd like to think a lineup of Baker Mathis Kiss/Thiam Harper Eugene would at worst hold their own on the glass and defensively inside. If you are set on playing 2 bigs than i guess I agree Eugene is better on the perimeter.

There is no rule that you can't post up your guards. It's not like they're being covered by the opposing teams big men. Harper is a very good post up player - Kiss also.

Pike is making a lo

You think Kiss can post up big 10 guards lol

I think what coach is really saying is he wants his players to play tougher. Don't be soft and just settle for threes, get in the paint to score or draw the contact and get to the line.

Agree. That and get your dang butts in the gym and improve your FTs!! Lol...

I would not limit individual gym practice to just foul shooting since most offensive stats need a major improvement.

I can't tell if this post is an additional comment or a rebuttal. Either way I agree with you and I am sure they're working on much more than free throw shooting when they're in the gym on their own.
