Inside Rutgers rowing’s ‘insane’ turnaround story ahead of NCAA Championships bid

Rutgers will make its first NCAA Championships appearance in 18 years this weekend, the final stop in a stunning turnaround season that has seen the program win the Eastern Sprints for the first time earlier this year, finish a school-best fourth in the conference meet and earn its first-ever national ranking. Racing starts Friday at Eagle Cree Park in Indianapolis.

“It’s insane. No one has ever seen this kind of improvement before," said senior Sarah Johanek, the team’s best rower and a four-year stalwart on its Varsity Eight boat, the most-prestigious assignment.

What a great story this is. Sounds like they have an excellent coach.

That article is simply amazing. EVERY Scarlet Knights Athletics fan - including those who swear up-and-down that the only way any of our programs can ever be good is by hiring a HC from this area - NEEDS to read it (hopefully one Is coming featuring our softball head coach, who hails from Florida, as well...).

Yes, to expand, the coach came from California. Probably knew little about Rutgers and had no ties to the area. In year 2, they are ranked #13 and got an NCAA bid for first time in 18 years.

Awesome job ... 2 advance and 1 missed by only 2.5 seconds!

RU 1V8 advances to the Semis tomorrow morning by placing 3rd in their heat behind only Stanford and Michigan. RU 2V8 finished 4th and just missed the semis by 2 secs behind Yale. They will race in the conso races tomorrow.
Terrific.

RU 1V8 finished 5th in their semis heat. Defeated Yale and was .3 secs from defeating Princeton for 4th. No shame in not placing...Washington, Stanford and OSU are all bonafide elite teams. RU legit should finish Top 10 tomorrow in the 1V8 Petite Finals.

RU V4 boat finishes 10th in the nation as well. Defeated Yale, Duke and UVA. Likely have a shot to finish Top 10 in the nation. One race left...2V8 13th-18th place.

What the coach has done is impressive, but congratulations to all of those girls who bought into his vision and training. It would have been easy to continue down the same path of mediocracy (or lower) of years past. They certainly reversed that trend.
