No Bowl, But The Coaches Can Hit The Recruiting Trail Early

Thought there is a dead period with no in-house recruiting during the winter holidays per NCAA regulations

Well that would kill this thread and suck for recruiting. I remember when Kelly left Cinci to take the ND job and didn't stay to coach Cinci in their bowl. The reason he gave for bailing right before their bowl was, "I have to start recruiting." Anyone know about a rule for a dead period?

And it is a question as opposed to stating a fact. I would also like to know. I do recall DJ Durkin getting a big jump on recruiting last year and not sure how he pulled that off, unless his recruiting wins came after bowl season

The attached may provide answers. haven't looked at it with any detail

It says a coaching staff (of up to six approved recruiters) can have contact with recruits from 11/27/16-1/28/17, though contact is not permitted from 12/12/16-1/11/17. So Ash & Co. can hit the road this Sunday. The only problem with us sucking so bad is that questions may arise about whether the coaches who are recruiting will be on staff next year. Ash is going to have to either make a public statement that all the coaches will be back (which will upset some of the fanbase), or assign different members of the staff to recruit in place of those not returning. The NCAA limit appears to be six recruiters to a staff (I had thought it was seven, but it may have changed). In any case, we can hit the road Sunday without the burden of running practice and preparing for a bowl.

Net benefit? I say yes.

You?
If they can't do both then they are in the wrong business. Ask any coach and they will tell you the practices are far more valuable. Coaches will hop in private planes and make visits before and after practice. They will make visits on days off. It not much of a advantage at all because the visits are only allowed during a 2 week period from November 27 to December 11.

(b) November 27, 2016, through January 28, 2017 [except for (1) and (2)

below]:

Six (6) in-person, off-campus contacts per prospective student-athlete

shall be permitted during this time period with not more than one

permitted in any one calendar week (Sunday through Saturday) or partial

calendar week.

Contact Period

(1) December 11, 2016, for all junior college prospective studentathletes

who intend to enroll midyear: Quiet Period

(2) December 12, 2016, through January 11, 2017: [applicable to all

prospective student-athletes (see Bylaw 13.02.5.5.2)]: Dead Period

But I do not think the coach can have contact with any recruits off campus. They can have the brush by meeting but that's it. Everything has to be done on campus right now.

Never understood why teams that aren't in bowls can't practice. In the pros teams that finish at the bottom get first choice at the incoming talent pool. in college there's no such advantage and you are further behind the 8 ball because you lose practice time relative to the good teams. Rigged system for the rich (teams)

They can for a two week period starting November 27. Like I said even with bowl practices coaches from bowl teams will still be making visits.

Recruiting right now after a extended losing streak will be difficult. Perception of the program compared to the competition can't be favorable. The emphasis should be on jucos and 5th year seniors who can provide immediate help along with keeping verbal commits until February 2017.
