NY Daily News Article

Dumb opening paragraphs:
"Big-time college football has finally arrived at Rutgers.

Yes, this is the school’s third year of play in the Big 10, but until this season, Rutgers was a mid-major football program mostly masquerading among the giants of the sport. It has been a Big East school in transition, with nothing more than a B1G patch on their uniforms to prove they belong on the same field as Ohio State and Michigan."

Some would say 2006 was big time football. Greg Schiano, like him or not, got us pretty close.

And RU beat Michigan in 2014. Yes, we were moving backwards the last few years. But we beat Indiana twice, Maryland and Michigan. Rome wasn't built in a day.

"with nothing more than a B1G patch on their uniforms to prove they belong on the same field as Ohio State and Michigan."

Didn't we beat Michigan on the same field as them in 2014 as a B1G conference member? Or that doesn't count because Hoke was HC and not Harbaugh. Also, IIRC Rutgers was a Big East member and the Big East was a BCS Conference participant. Or that doesn't count either?

I've come to really dislike a significant majority of the sports media. Maybe I'm imagining it, but there was a day a time ago when there was a lot less sensationalism and made up statements portrayed as facts written.

There will be some here that will lap this story up and think it is great.

Beating Michigan was 2 years ago, but only dwell on the negative.

For us it was huge, on a national stage, it was Rutgers beating a down and out Michigan on its last legs before they fired their coach.

I am just telling you how people outside our fan base look at these things.

"Meyer, who recruits only players projected to be first-round NFL picks..."

From a pure quantitative and empirical standpoint, this statement is nonsense. And calls to question his other assertions.

And some inside our fanbase. Some of our fans love having the Napoleon complex of being Rutgers. Waiting for the first trotting out of "Same old Rutgers."

There are only a handful of storied programs like Ohio State, Michigan, etc.

Many fans think we have come a long way, and Greg got us to the big time. We were treading water in the big time pool since 2006, and perhaps we went went under in the flood waters last year. We also gave Michigan State a game last year. But let's trot out more excuses why that did not count either like the negatoids we like to be.

I'm not fighting with you, just fighting the whole "we suck" attitude that some fans seem to perpetually have.

I think that has been said elsewhere. And Dave Revsine (sp) and Howard Griffith were wetting their pants giddy over tOSU's 2017 class, which seems to be getting better by the day. I think they said they have 8 of the top 50 players, with 2 more about to commit. That is in another stratosphere.

There are 32 NFL first round picks. Ohio State recruits (not necessarily signs) a hell of a lot more than 32 players per year.

As an alumnus in my sixth decade, I can say, "our" FB program has arrived. Yesterday is behind us. This is B1G-time football, and "we" are a part of it, and I'm grateful and thankful for where "we" now are, today. Tomorrow is up to "us" and our $. A few B1G wins will win over many skeptics and, hopefully, shake some $ out of many dormant alumni and old and new fans.

They also smacked down UNC bad in a bowl game two years ago everyone has forgotten about.

I think that it is more that they recruit players who they think have first round potential. They are recruiting players who they believe are elite.

I hear you, you should see the replies I get when I tell people that we were actually a very good team since at least the teens and only really started to struggle big time when we jumped to the FBS in 1978. No one wants to hear that! LOL.

Also please keep in mind that news site love hyperbole, they want to try to make our comeback seem even more epic, but it is an insult to our real history and goes against facts.

So I agree with you 100% but that is just not the narrative

Isn't NY Daily in the same league with the Enquirer? Talk about trash publications.
Also, I believe he's a SU grad.

OMG... that was just about the worst possible way to paint those facts.

"Their first year in the Big 10, Rutgers went 8-5 and won the Quick Lane Bowl. But last season, the wheels fell off and amid several player arrests ranging from home invasion to assault, a grade-changing scandal involving the head coach and a 4-8 finish, Rutgers cleaned house."

Here's what local coverage should say about the same subjects:

"Their first year in the Big 10, Rutgers went 8-5, beat Michigan and won the Quick Lane Bowl. But last season, the wheels fell off and amid several player arrests ranging from robbery of a campus drug dealers house to assault over a parking space, a head coach attempting to influence a players grades and a 4-8 finish, Rutgers cleaned house."

It was bad enough without making readers thing Rutgers actually changed grades for players or the average readers homes could have been invaded by Rutgers players.

He's a Temple alum and went to Syracuse. What do you expect?

Agree with this. For a long time I have seen Rutgers players savaged by Rutgers fans.. and by broadcast crews too.

Rutgers games were painted in a poor light 90% of the time, no matter what was happening.

Then I would watch other games in the "big time" light and see a lot of the same mistakes but in those games they were presented as stars just playing. No barbs tossed out about how the program lacked talent, etc etc.

I think this is something that being in the Big Ten will solve over time. We will play enough big time games against recognized top talent and when we perform they will have to give us our due. Nationally, ESPN will paint success by Rutgers against top Big Ten teams as a sign that the Big Ten is over-rated.. to boost their SEC and ACC products. But that will become less important in the long run as enough people will see enough games to know better.. and the playoffs will give some opportunities to show conference strength.

The only remaining issue will be that the Big Ten is a cold weather conference and teams must be made to compete in those conditions and that will not help come bowl time. Nothing can be done about that.. its not like well see SEC teams use their open November OOC dates to play outdoors up north.. they reserve that time for Citadel and GA Southern and so on.

more accurately - Big-time college football has finally arrived on the list of topics for Daily News Sports writers to cover - - in the past they have done their level best to ignore obvious indications that such activity exists in the Metro - NYC area

Of course if this guy were a music critic - he would write an article about Paul McCartney & tell you with astonishment that McCartney had actually been in a band before he was in Wings"

It's the Eastern sports media. When things are going well they build you up to a level you can't possibly maintain. When things are going poorly they try to bury you.

I honestly don't see the '15 off field fiascos being forgotten for a very long time. Misery sells.

I also think the frankly miserable fanbase who has always been so willing to buy into anything even remotely negative and beat it to death makes reporting like this worthwhile.
