I don't understand how Virginia is so successful in the ACC and looks so out of whack in the first round against opponents they should easily defeat by double digits.

I think so too, but this is absurd to happen two times in a year. Not a good look for Bennett and this program to not be able to focus in on playing a 16 seed

The Cavs can turn it on when they have to. In the ACC tourney, they were trailing by a point to NC State with 15 minutes to go. They ended up winning by 20.
