Title (the article and the OP) is a little misleading.

He will be assigned to their G-League team.
They have to sign him in order to waive him to get his G-League rights.
He’s not playing on the NBA roster.

“Just like with Maldonado and Williams, McConnell and Flagler will presumably be waived shortly and be assigned to the OKC Blue once the Thunder acquire their G League rights.”

I remember his first game at the RAC. It looked like he couldn’t even dribble at this level. He basically got on the court by playing defense and then developed other parts of his game. Says a lot about him and Pike’s ability to develop.

It's pretty clear he was SIGNED to a two-way contract just like Ron. It's not misleading. He signed a contract.

Obviously not since he wasn’t signed to a two-way contract.

He was signed by the Thunder.
But not to play on the NBA roster. He was signed to be waived - as I pointed out.
It’s a roster technicality.

So it is misleading. He was signed by the Thunder to end up on their G-League team.

Seems like Caleb's contract isn't a two way one, but is one that can be changed into one

Caleb McConnell Signs NBA Exhibit-10 Contract with OKC Thunder - Rutgers University Athletics
>An Exhibit 10 contract is a one-year, minimum-salary NBA deal that allows the franchise to convert the contract to a two-way contract if that change is made before the start of the regular season.<

Thunder already have three 2-way contracts signed so that is unlikely.

Nobody flip out when he's likely "waived" tomorrow.

Looks like you're right
>After a long wait, Caleb McConnell was signed to a G League contract by the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday. The former Rutgers star originally signed an Exhibit-10 contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder following the NBA Draft in June. However, following a respectable performance in the NBA Summer League in July, OKC never confirmed that McConnell would be retained.<

What people said is that the Exhibit 10 contract is a G league contract for the NBA league minimum, and if they play sticks with the G league team for 60 days they get a 5-75k bonus. And there is an option to convert to a 2 Way contract anytime before the season starts.

So what stands out and is confusing is statement that the contract is for the NBA league minimum, which is like 900k or something. What does that mean? Is Caleb getting 900k? Or is it prorated and they could waive him in a week from even the G league team and he gets only a fraction? It's not clear.

It's not spelled out but I think he gets the prorated minimum while he's there, with the expectation that he'll get waived and offered a G-League contract plus a bonus from the Ex10. With the best case scenario typically being a 2-way, except they already have their 2-ways filled so not really a possibility in this case.

"Exhibit 9 and Exhibit 10 contracts are commonly referred to as “summer contracts” or “training camp contracts”. These players are being brought in to provide competition in training camp, to give coaches some extra bodies for drills and scrimmages, and sometimes to prove they are worthy of a regular season roster spot."

Yes its confusing - especially when people run with headlines that don't tell the whole story.

End goal: Thunder want Caleb on their G-League team.

In order to do this, they need his G-League rights.
In order to get those, he must be "signed" by the Thunder then waived.
It's all roster manipulation.
He signed a non-guaranteed deal currently.

If he made the real Thunder roster - it would be worth approx $900k for the year (turns guaranteed in January).

Once waived (likely today), Thunder can sign Caleb to a standard G-League contract (approx $50k). He can earn a bonus (5k-75k) because of the type of contract he signed with the team.

This is NOT a two-way contract like RHJ.
If Caleb is a "walk on", then RHJ is a PWO (making approx 500k).

Benefit for Caleb: He can be elevated/signed by any team in the NBA if they want him during the season.
RHJ is tied to ONLY Raptors this year.

@ $40-$50K G-League salaries are deplorable IMO considering the average NBA Salary is almost $10M per season. The G-League has 30 teams with 10 players per roster - so ~300 Total. By comparison the MLB Associated minor league salaries average is in the same range, but there are 4 Levels with a roster size of ~30 each so the player pool is a minimum of 3600 that has to be rostered and paid not including instructional leagues.
