On the Banks: Potential Coaching Candidates

Taking a head coaching position at Rutgers comes with risks because of the lack of NJ recruiting connections.Mens basketball is a far more difficult job because of decades of losing, lack of financial support,a small fan base and a facility that needs major upgrades to be competitive with B1G opponents.

I don't see the sales pitch that would attract a coach that could turn the program around.Sendek would be a excellent choice but doubt he would consider Rutgers because of the items cited above.

I have our head coach right here.

He used to coach in the NBA. Former Coach of the Year in the NBA. Worked with Jason Kidd & Kobe Bryant. Helped Gilbert Arenas become a superstar. Coached a team into the NBA playoffs multiple times.

I think he's working here right now. His name is Eddie Jordan.

Aaron Breitman wrote a thorough and excellent article listing many of the coaches that have come up her before to build this moribund program into a winner. I concur with Aaron regarding Sendek, Greenburg and Lonergan. Those three would be my top candidates especially if Amaker and Hurley poo-pooed the idea of coaching on the banks. I do like some of Aaron's out-of-the-box choices especially Piskiell (sp?) but would happy with the top 3 that I listed above.

He has a 26 game conference losing streak. Hasn't beaten a top 100 team in 13 months. He hasn't been the head coach of a winning team since 2008.

It's hard to win when your players are all injured.

Newsflash...this aint the NBA, when are you people going to get it through your heads...fish out of water

Pikiell and Brown intrigue. However they must have the assistants and resources to succeed. Jordan doesn't have them but his downfall here will be the on-court results (whether hes let go this year or next).

The lack of defense is on Jordan but I know he walked into a bad situation. But you have to understand college jobs our difficult. So he kept two assistants from Rice regime right off the bat to keep the team together. At that point, any attempt at a full rebuild was tarnished. Cox and Seagears left after year Year 1. So did Kyle Triggs, a first time assistant and questionable hire for a long time NBA HC. Another bad sign. A year later, another DMV player transferred in Etou.

The rebuild was compromised from day 1

Calipari was a failed NBA head coach. Jordan was a successful one. He's going to be successful here. The NBA is harder to coach than college. It is the best basketball league in the world with the best players. Eddie will get it done here.

You are impatient. I am here to offer a counterpoint to you. I'm doing a great job.

Calipari was a successful college coach that failed in the NBA. So were Pitino and Tarkanian.

Jordan's comparisons (NBA coach to college) include Isaiah Thomas and Avery Johnson. One totally failed the other still remains to be seen.

I would consider taking a shot with Dooley too. Coached under Self and has NJ roots.

the writer doesn't understand this type of discussion is

An impatient Rutgers basketball fan - is there such a thing

lmao...This is too easy. Calipari built a program from nothing at UMass. I could care less what he did in the NBA. I could care less what Eddie did. It does not matter. College involves so much more than the NBA. Anyone can see that so you are pretty ignorant. Plus Eddie was a sub 500 coach that doesn't seem successful

Frankly Im not impressed with the list. I dont see a veteran coach like Seth or Sendek taking this job. Id empty the bank for Danny and give him an 8 year deal. It will take that long. Hopefully Hobbs can heal the wounds after laast admin insulted danny before hiring EJ. Might have a better shot at Danny after Barchi leaves.

Otherwise I'd be looking at a grinder, someone with P5 assistant experience plus some HC. I would not hire any of these guys from small time programs that haven't coached (as an assistant) and recruited at a P5 level. Its a whole another world. Someone like Masiello is intriguing despite his brush with resume enhancing. I like Bashir mason also (Wagner) but he hasnt coached at a power 5 - but his experience on the other side of recruiting working for Danny at St Bens might suffice. And then there is Boyle.

Greenberg and Sendek won't come but you expect a P5 assistant with HC experience take it? Saying you want a grinder with that resume sounds good but it's not dealing in reality. Here's a few that meet the criteria.

Jeff Capel? Won't take it

Norm Roberts? No thanks.

Rick Stansbury? Wouldn't take it and not a fit in Northeast.

Stan Heath at BC? No thanks.

Former Auburn HC at Kentucky? No thanks.

Bobby Lutz at NC State? Too old

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I did not mean a current P5 Assistant. What I meant was IMO I would ONLY hire a guy who has P5 assistant experience. could currently be a HC or out of work. would prefer someone who has HC exp coupled with previous P5 assistant experience.

Steve Masiello would take it i think. Question is would we want him.

Rutgersal is laughing at this post.

For those who want Hurley, what makes you think Hobbs would give him what he wanted before Jordan was hired, or lower his demands that caused him to walk away from the talks about taking over the RU MBB program that lead to Eddie being hired.
RU could be a career killer if he didn't succeed and you can bet Danny's not going to gamble with his career unless he gets the deal he wants
Money might not be that much of an object if Hobbs wants him , but power and time will be something DH demands from Hobbs and that might be too much for him to ask from Hobbs.

Pastner might be ready to jump knowing Memphis is getting down on him because of the way his team has played last season and this one.

Danny Hurley does not deserve seven years. Bobby in a shorter time has accomplished far more.

Agreed. Also hard to win when your players aren't injured too, apparently.

Yes.

Losses to St Francis and FDU/St. Peter's with a fully healthy squad consisting of Etou, Mack and Jack?

And 61-point loss with Jack, Mack, Etou, Judge, Seagears, Moore, Lewis, etc?

So how many games do we win because of Doorson and Diallo? One against Illinois?

Almost want him to come back just to hear how creative he gets with next years excuses... Can hear it now, we are still young, we have players recovering from injury who missed a whole season, blah blah, the no accountability train will continue
