In 2016, Rutgers has played four opponents who currently rank between #1 and #8 in both the AP and Coaches Polls. That has never happened in Rutgers history before. If you count Iowa's #25 ranking only in the Coaches Poll, then Rutgers played 5 teams that were ranked in the week the team's met. That is also a Rutgers record.

The closest would be in the seasons when various retro-pollsters looked back and picked mythical "National Champions." During a 3-4-1 season in 1884, Rutgers played a home-and-away series against Princeton and hosted Yale (with star player Walter Camp) at College Field.

For 1884, the retro-pollsters selected Yale National Champions by the National Championship Foundation (1869-2000), Helms Athletic Foundation (1883-1982) and Co-National Champions with Princeton by Parke Davis (1869-1933). Princeton selected National Champions by Billingsley Report (1869-2006).

So technically, Rutgers played the eventual National Champions 3 times in 1884!

It may happen again next year as well with Washington, OSU, Mich and PSU on the schedule.

You may find yourself living in a shotgun shack.
