Scary stuff (more annoying than anything else) - looks like it may be time to go back to cash. One of these skimmers was actually found in an ATM at Bank of America. Also just read the reason that gas stations are so popular for these skimmers is that most pumps are open with a universal key - brilliant!!!.....so much for the new chips on these credit cards.

I only use one ATM in my area, and the wife and I originally took a good look at the face of it, depth of it, etc, to try to be aware if something were to be changed....

Unfortunately some of these are undetectable. I am a huge plastic person - this is going to be a very big change for me.

I thought they hang a skimmer in front of the ATM machine, so it would stick out further... the face might look the same, but it would hopefully be noticeable in that way...am I wrong?

On some I suppose, but the reason why gas stations are so popular is because of the universal key that gets into most pumps, which means they have access to the payment area too which makes them undetectable. I don't know what else they can get into, but here is a story about it a couple of years ago on ABC:

good video.... I guess best not to charge gas

Boy its pretty funny for decades my friends from other states always laughed that we don't pump our own gas...now we may be safer than any other state in the country...

Another reported on an ATM at the 7-Eleven on Westfield Avenue in Clark.

at the end of the day does it matter? Its the CC companies issue, not yours. I've had my card compromised repeatedly and it never cost me a cent.

I am a Director of Corporate Audit for a large bank. It is impossible for the untrained eye to spot a skimming device on an ATM. I have trained professionals who I hire to train our branch personnel on how to inspect our ATMs for skimming devices. While they are very good at finding these skimming devices, even they will admit that they may miss one from time-to-time. Unfortunately, we have some really sharp criminals out there who have managed to develop devices that are very difficult to spot - even by trained professionals.

Fortunately for the consumer, the bank will make you whole and will immediately issue you a new card it your card information was compromised.

My problem is I use my debit card more than a credit card. I need to switch that up.

I did consulting work for a bank in Florida that had to reimburse 3800 customers for the funds debited from their accounts due to a skimming device placed on a gas pump at a very busy Race Trac gas station.

Self service gas stations and C stores are a perfect target for criminals looking to place a skimming device.

The card issuers are indeed very good with this. But It can be a pain after repeated incidents. Last year I needed a new card for six straight months. Never did figure out how the crooks were getting the card number, and Chase was entirely unconcerned. The just sent me a new card each time and forgave the charges. They were completely uninterested in identifying the culprits. I guess they are making a whole ton of money off the interest rates.

it annoys me if my card has been compromised, you feel a bit violated.... it makes me angry with the scum that is out there that is not willing to
work and make a living the right way.... just because we as the customers are not stuck with the bill doesn't fix everything.....

One way they used to do it was physically take your credit card, for example at a restaurant, and after skimming it they bring the card back to you.

Friday I was at Lowes and the skimmer didn't work because I have the chip. The cashier asked me for my card and I gave it to her, and she punched in my number on the register and asked me my name and address. I was watching her like a hawk because they never did this before.

It not a huge deal. I had my card stolen 4 times last year. Each time it was a physical card made but each time the charge was declined and I was notified by text message. They ended up with nothing. The bottom line is never use you Bank ATM card to make purchases. If you are going to use an ATM make sure it one in a highly visible location. Most often these skimmers are found on ATM that are hidden where they can be installed at night or in those shady convenience type stores. Just make sure you use a good credit card company (I love Chase for this)who will take care of it with no hassle.

That why I think more and more places are going to go with pay at the table machines.
