There are certain movies and shows that I cannot help but watch every time they are on. Shawshank. Goodfellas. And this. Rutgers has been non existent in hoops for so long that it's a treat to hear V tell his story about Rutgers basketball and the Green Bay Packers. My God those guys loved him So sad that Lo Charles passed before the show. I remember watching the original event. I couldn't figure out what the hell had happened. Did anyone besides V think they could beat Phi Slamna Jamma? Prolly not but beating Ralph Sampson must have made their gonads grow . Derek Whittenberg and Thurl Bailey are two guys I would love to meet. These are the guys you bring in to a program to win with. Greatest college basketball moment of the 20th century. I agree. Jimmy V. Point guard. Rukkas.

Great documentary. All of those kids are characters guys. One can just see how choked up they were when reminsicing about Jimmy V. I thought funniest part of show was when Gannon was telling the story about Drexler looking at him at the All Star Game and Gannon then going to him and telling him when they last met...lol

NC State basketball fans have been delusional about their program ever since winning that championship in '83.

I liked the story how the teams were sent to hotel by seed ....and nc State was in some trampy hotel

I was at the game-----annual Final 4 weekend trip used to take with the guys.

Don't know if it was the biggest moment at a Final 4 though------MJ's jumper to beat GTown and Keith Smarts shot to beat Cuse would be right there.

I believe personally that the Laettner shot in Philly to beat UK in Regional Final was the biggest play in the NCAA's in my lifetime though.

Final 4 used to be so much better back in the day when it was played in Arena's not football stadiums like it is now.

I've seen that 30 for 30 show and it was very well done----most of them are.

Russ I will be in Raleigh next month with the parents of an NC State grad. Believe me they are not delusional. Rutgers fans still talk about the '76 team as if it was yesterday. Everyone deserves their special moment .

Yes, everyone deserves their special moment. They're a special bunch tho. They think they're as relevant as North Carolina's program. They're trying to figure out why they're not regularly landing 5-star prospects because they won a championship in 1983.

They believe that the only reason they couldn't hire a coach better than Gottfried is because Gary Williams was telling coaches not to take the job.

Herb Sendek's five straight NCAA Tournaments were not good enough for them so they ran him out of Raleigh and hired Sidney Lowe who proceeded to miss the tournament five straight seasons.

The NC State Rivals site has one of the best basketball reporters on the network in Jacey Zembal. He tried to break down the Dennis Smith Jr. situation to them and they got upset at him for telling them the truth.

Rutgers Al ain't got nuthin on the average NC State fan.

I will say that the wolf hand gesture thing that they do is cute.

I missed the first 45 minutes or so of last night's telecast but saw the rest, which included the entirety of their run through the NCAAs beginning with their game against Pepperdine. Jimmy V's comments were always so hilarious, it's easy to see why the players liked him so much. There were also several cuts away from the tourney games to show parts of the ESPY Awards speech.

His senior year at Rutgers - 1966-67 - was my freshman year. That team was RU's first ever to go into the post-season and the entire campus was into the team, which was an easy team to love. V. was in the back court with his best friend Bobby Lloyd, the nation's best free throw shooter and one of its leading scorers. I still recall the night when Jimmy scored his 1000th point. It was a home game at the Barn + the crowd went so berserk for so long that we actually delayed the game.

Back then, the NCAA tournament had just 23 teams and the NIT just 14 so getting any bid was a big deal. All games were played at MSG; the move to campus sites was made much later. RU's 1st tournament game was against #14 Utah State on a Saturday night + RU fans filled the old (pre-1968) MSG to the rafters. The game was intense with many lead changes before RU emerged with a 2 point victory. RU went on to knock off #13 New Mexico, lost to SIU which was led by Walt Frazier, and won the consolation game against Marshall.

I always wished he had gotten the head coaching job at RU after his stint at Iona. I think he would have been a winner here as well.

Before my time, must have been cool to see the early emergence of Rutgers basketball in the 60's and you could argue the beginnings of the total move toward big-time college sports at RU.

My frost year also. We’re you an eco major? I was so maybe we had a class or two together

I was an eco major though it turned out not be the best decision for me. I originally planned to major in PoliSci but was turned off by the intro course (intro course were typically two semesters back then). Ultimately, many years later, I returned to RU and earned an MA and PhD in geography, which should have been my original major. That was followed by a wonderful 25 year career teaching at Hofstra, from which I am now retired.

Thanks for that re-cap- I didn't know that much about the 1967 team's run. Started rooting for Rutgers when I was 7 during the 1975-76 season.

Such a shame that the GT-UNC final ended the way it did. What an incredible game.
